  • i man _Jrts I November 4,1998 Lady Cats Rise to Second Place in the Conference 11 by Eric Stevens Staff Writer The standings in Southern Conference volleyball were totally altered this weekend. Going into the weekend, Davidson was number one and Western was number four. The Cats desperately needed a win Sunday against the Davidson Wildcats in Cullowhee. For the last home game of the season, the Cats battled Davidson for over two hours, finally coming out on top 3-2 (15- 6, 10-15, 15-10, 12-15, 15-10). This puts Western and Davidson in a tie for second place in the Southern Conference, each with a 10-4 record in the conference. Chattanooga faired well this weekend as they took control of the top spot in the South- em Conference at 11-3. Following the match, assistant coach, Ben Bodipo-Memba stated, "This win shows that we can play with anyone in the conference. It [the win] is big. Davidson is one of the—if not the best— team in the league." He added, "We've got a full head of steam and a lot of momentum going into the last stages of the season." With yet another strong performance, junior Shannon Sweeney led the Cats with a double-double with 25 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Christy Attebery also had a double-double with 10 kills, 14 digs, al Cullowhee v You don't have to pick up your own balls anymore! On campus, behind running track, now open. Junior Ramsey Herron had a great game with eight kills, 12 digs, and six blocks. The three seniors who were honored on Sunday's Senior Day also did their share. Elizabeth Smith had 15 digs, Keeya McManus had 13 kills, and Holly Poff contributed 12 kills, eight blocks, and seven digs. Senior trainer Jennifer Elliot was also honored in pre-game. The match was a battle from the beginning. In the first game, the Cats lost the first five points, came back with the next 11, and won the game 15-6. The second game stayed tight until 9-9, when the Wildcats added a few more and took the win 10-15. Western's strong 10-3 start of the third game quickly became 11-9, but the Cats stayed together to pull it out, 15-10. Neither team would back down in game four, until 12-12, when Davidson won the last three points to take the game. With the score tied at nine in the fifth and deciding game, the Cats went on a 5-0 run to set up the game winning point, Sweeny's twenty-fifth kill. "This win is extremely important going into tomorrow's game," said Head Coach Michelle Hansen after Western's Saturday 3-0 (15-8, 15-7, 15-6) win over UNC Greensboro in Cullowhee. "It feels good after two straight losses," Hansen said referring to Western's two losses last week to Chattanooga and Tennessee that broke their seven-match, 21-game winning streak. Five Lady Cats were in double figures in kills in the game. Freshman Christy Attebery poured in a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Junior Shannon Sweeney also posted a 12-kill 10-dig double-double. Senior Holly Poff and junior Ramsey Herron poured in 12 and 14 kills respectively and added nine digs each. The first two games started a little slow for both teams. But in each game, Western gained composure and took control. The third game was basically all Western, leading the entire way and winning the last three points to take the match. With four conference games and the Southern Conference Tournament left to be played, our Lady Cats have a good chance at a Conference title. The Catamounts play their next match against East Tennessee State on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. in Johnson City, Tennessee.
