  • 10 sports September 30,1998 inian Rugby A Team Falls to NC State B Team Victorious by Mark Smith Rugby Team The Western Carolina Rugby team was presented with an early season test this past Saturday against the reigning state champions, the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The Pack emerged victorious, 18-5. The Wolfpack intimidated the Catamounts early and took the lead through a non-converted try. Following that score the nerves of the Cat players seemed to settle, leading to an equalizing try soon after. Although WCU played with determination, the more experienced Wolfpack capitalized on several Catamount penalties to lead take a 13-5 lead at the half. After the half Western only surrendered one more try to the tough Pack. The Wolfpack has posted impressive victories this season over Virginia Tech (24-7) and Davidson (61-0). The close score is a tribute to the progress that the Western Carolina rugby program has made. In the previous meeting, NC State demolished the Cats 54-0. Following the A Game, the WCU B-side, which has 11 rookies, shocked the NC State B- Team with an impressive 17-10 victory. With this win, the future potential of WCU Rugby received a positive outlook. The Wolfpack coach said, "Western was the hardest hitting team we have faced in several years and with experience will be a formidable force in SEC Rugby." WCU Rugby will face mountain arch-rivals Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Davidson Wildcats in a round-robin tournament on October 17 in Cullowhee. The Rugby Club is always looking for new players. Anyone interested in joining the team can contact Coach Mark Smith at 227-7333 or attend practice behind Reid Gym Tuesday through Thursday, 4-6 p.m. Volleyball Suffers Rough Weekend by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor For the second week in a row, the Western Carolina University volleyball team suffered a rough weekend. The Catamounts fell 3-0 (14- 16, 8-15, 8-15) to the Davidson Wildcats last Saturday and 3-2 (8- 15, 7-15, 15-8, 15-8, 10-15) to the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Friday. With the pair of losses, Western fell to 7-8 on the year, 2-3 in the Southern Conference, which places them in a three-way tie for fifth. Assistant coach Ben Bodipo- Memba commented, "We played bad against Davidson, but simply played down against UNC Greensboro. Our play this weekend reflected our play all of this year — inconsistent. Unforced errors killed us." WCU played better ball on Saturday against a tough Davidson, but couldn't manage a win, getting blanked 3-0. Senior Keeya McManus was one of the only bright spots for the Cats. She recorded a team-high 15 kills on 29 attempts, with only five errors (.345 attack percentage). Ramsey Herron also played good for WCU, tallying 19 digs. Jessi Fick also played well, handing out 35 set assists. Unfortunately for Hansen's Cats, the usually dynamic duo of Shannon Sweeney and Christy Atterbery couldn't manage to put up their expected big numbers. Despite them both having 12 digs, their kill numbers were down. Sweeney finished with nine kills, but also committed seven errors, lowering her attack percentage to .048 Atterbery managed only seven kills and had six errors. On Friday, Keeya McManus also turned in a double-figure kill performance, with 12 against the Lady Spartans. She only committed two errors, with an attack percent age of .417. "Keeya played great this weekend," stated Bodipo-Memba. "She looked unstoppable at the net." Sweeney and Herron both turned in double-double performances with 14 and 10 kills, and 14 and 11 digs, respectively. The Catamounts return to friendly Reid Gymnasium this Thursday to kick off a crucial six- game home stand against the East Tennessee State Buccanears. Bodipo-Memba calls this match "our first 'must win' game of the year." "It's right here in the middle of our season and at a good time for us. We need it confidence-wise and for position in our conference," explained Bodipo-Memba. Jacksonville State is the only non-conference opponent, which plays in Cullowhee the same day as the first ever match-up with The Citadel. The series concludes with a big match against arch-rival, Appalachian State. Cats to Invade Greenville by Eric Stevens Staff Writer Coming off Saturday's 31-24 double-overtime win in Cullowhee against East Tennessee, a team that Bleil called the best WCU has beaten since he's been in Cullowhee, the Catamounts will travel to Greenville to meet the Furman Paladins in what should be a great Southern Conference match-up. They [Furman] are very sound in their techniques and are very will coached," commented Bleil, "They have a balanced run/pass offense and are very big and physical on defense. They make you earn everything you get." Furman is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference after Saturday's 51-14 thrashing of VMI. The Paladins destroyed VMI with 500 total yards, while QB Justin Hill went 11 of 17, throwing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Furman receiver Tyron Berrian caught four passes for 136 yards, and another Furman receiver, Des Kitchings, caught five passes for 102 yards. Furman's defense seemed to be a successful complement with their offense. They forced six punts, five fumbles, and an interception against VMI. Two Furman linebackers, Will Bouton and pre-season All American Orlando Ruff, each had 11 tackles. Bouton and Ruff combined have 88 tackles after four games. The Cats just managed to beat Furman 17-16 in last year's meeting in Cullowhee. Ranked first in the Southern Conference in the preseason, the Paladins had a strong but disappointing team last year. They finished third in the conference with a 7-4 record. This year, Furman is returning 13 starters, but must count on eight new defensive starters to give the offense the support it needs. Game time is Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at Furman's Paladin Stadium in Greenville, SC.
