Head coach Danny Williamson commented, "It was a fun meet-a good meet to be in. I was very proud of our kids this season." Entering the competition, the Western women were the defending Southern Conference champions. And for the large majority of this year's championship, they looked like they were going to successfully defend their crown, leading the event through Friday and most of the day on Saturday. However, a hard-charging Appalachian State edged the Lady Catamounts out on the last day to take the Championship. It was the Goons tenth outdoor tide since 1987. Boone Vocational won 167 to Western's 159, followed by Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Furman, Davidson, and finally, Wofford with only eight points. "It was a meet of us and Appalachian going back and forth," explained Williamson. "They were just a little bit better as a team in the end. We just came up a little bit short." Out of the 19 individual events, Western Carolina's women now hold the championship in five of them. Junior Kamiliah Gabriel won the 100 and 400- meter hurdle races. Her times came in at 14.80 and 64.94 respectively. She also placed third in the triple jump. In the 400-meter hurdles, Western Carolina had four of the top six performers. Tami Welch, Emily Welch, and Crystal Turner, along with Gabriel, finished up at the top. In her final Southern Conference Championship, senior Robyn Stockunas turned in a winning performance in the hammer throw and a third in the javelin throw. Senior comrade and two-sport athlete, LaSha Jackson recorded a pair of second place finishes in shot put and the javelin throw. Shawanta Person won the 400-meter dash, while Siler City, N.C. sophomore Jenny Warfford won the title in the 10,000- meter distance event, with a time of 37:12.65. The Lady Catamount 4x 100-meter relay team finished third in the competition, while the 4x400-meter team finished second. For the Catamount men's team, the results of the Outdoor Championship were familiar ground. Just as in the Indoor Championship, the Cats finished a solid, but nonetheless disappointing fourth. Homestanding Virginia Military Institute won their second straight Conference title by scorching the field with 171 points. Boone Vocational was a distant second with 125 points, followed by East Tennessee State, Western, and Chattanooga. Six through nine were The Citadel, Furman, Wofford, and Davidson. Following competition on Friday, the Catamounts found themselves in second place. However, the Cats slipped down and finished with 107 points. "There was a little bit of disappointment—we should have finished second," stated Danny Williamson. "We just had a few mishaps in competition." The men won three conference titles. Junior Phillip Johnson paced the team by winning two events; the hammer throw and the discus throw. Johnson also placed third in the shot put competition. Junior Cory Cooper won the High Jump event for the Catamounts. He cleared 6'8" to take the title. The pole-vaulters of Tim Thomas and Joe Condrey placed third and sixth for Western Carolina. Senior Collin Webster placed second in the 10,000-meter distance event for the Catamounts. He was a about five seconds behind the winner. Also performing well were Rayshon Cartheon in the long jump (third) and Rahssaan Uldaneta, who placed second in the 110-meter hurdle. Brian Clark placed third in the 5,000-meter run and Joe Hyman finished fourth in the 400-meter dash for WCU. Also, the 4X 100-meter relay team placed a third place finish behind VMI and ETSU. It was the second loss in a row for Western who also lost the second game of a double header to The Citadel Saturday. Western (33-11, 15-5 in SoCon) started hot by scoring five runs in the first inning and added another in the top of the fourth before UNC- A (23-25) exploded for seven runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. The seven-run rally was all the 'Dogs would need as UNC-A marathon reliever Jason White shut down the Catamount offense. White pitched 8.2 innings of relief work. The Catamounts can't dwell on the UNC- A loss for too long because it is the Southern Conference opponents that Western must now turn their attention towards if they are to win a 10th regular season conference title. With six conference games left to be completed this week, the Cats are sitting third in the SoCon race with a 15-5 conference record. Front-runner UNC Greensboro is 20-4 in conference action but has only three games with Georgia Southern remaining on the SoCon schedule. For the Catamounts to bring the gold back to Cullowhee they have to win the remaining games and UNC Greensboro would have to lose two of the three games against Georgia Southern. The advantage for the Catamounts is that their remaining games come against the bottom feeders of the Southern Conference, ETSU and Appalachian State. Both series are on the road. UNC Greensboro's series with Georgia South- em is in Statesboro, Ga. Western was scheduled to complete a rained out game against ETSU Wednesday afternoon before playing a double header immediately following the make-up. The make-up game will consist of the last four innings of the lead the Cats against App. State this photo by T.K. Roberts rained out game from last week that was suspended with the Cats trailing S-5. This Saturday, the Catamounts will wrap-up the 1998 Southern Conference regular season against Appalachian State in Boone. Appalachian (12-24, 6-14) sits in ninth place in the conference, a game ahead of ETSU and a game behind Davidson and VMI. The Mountaineers will be fighting for their post season survival against the Catamounts as they sit a game out of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Southern Conference Tournament is scheduled for next weekend in Charleston, S.C, and only the top eight teams in the conference qualify for the tournament and the chance to go to the NCAA Tournament. WCU holds the series lead on Appalachian State with a 44-28 record against the Mountaineers. The baseball Catamounts will attempt to become only the second team this academic year to defeat the Mountaineers. The women's tennis team accomplished the task last weekend. Saturday's double header in Boone will begin at noon and the first pitch of Sunday's game will come at 1:00 p.m. Boone weather permitting, of course.
