  • 10 Catamount is Out, • liit mer is In by Daniel Hooker Following yet another year of the Catamount getting his head bashed by the infamous Inbred Jed of Appalachian State, officials at Western Carolina University have rumored that the Catamount, which has been the icon for WCU's athletic teams since 1933, will be changed. The new symbol forWCUwillbe just as unique as the Catamount. Yet, hopefully, more successful in evading opponents. What, you may be asking, could be more unique and better than the original Catamount? Well, back in 1933, when head foot ball coach, C. C. Poindexter, who favored the Cats, another entry was submitted—it was the Mountain Boomer. You have probably all seen the mountain boomers here around campus of Western Carolina. They are the little squirrels that rummage around the hillsides, punching up the ground leaves and straw of the fall season, searching for food. Equipped with their well-developed sense of smell and hearing, these lightning- quick animals are experts at avoiding predators such as eagles, wildcats, and canines (bulldogs and terriers). Around the conference, there exists several other threats of the unnatural kind to the well being of our Boomer, which will be named "Monty." Examples of these threats are that inbred, flee-ridden mascot of Boone Vocational, Inbred Jed, the sissy Spartan, the confused Buccaneer that resides six hours from water, the boxing-kangaroo Keydet of VMI, and the puny, purple Paladin of Furman all will pose a threat to the Boomer. However, equipped with his acorn-propelling gun and his tree-scaling skills, Monty, the Mountain Boomer should be able to take care of himself. Knowing the weather patterns of Cullowhee, Monty is well-suited with his wa terproof fur covering. Since the mountain boomer, and most squirrels for that matter, are most active during the daytime, there will be no more scheduled night contests for all of Western Carolina athletic teams. That includes the basketball games, which will now be played outdoors on the goals behind Harrill Residence Hall. A coach was noted as saying, "It's about damn time! I never really liked that Catamount mascot anyhow. It wasn't tough enough. However, that little mountain boomer seems like it will be a much better representation of the athletics here at Western." He went on to add, "And besides, a Catamount is too big to have as a pet. But, I can keep one of them Boomers in my living room!" In an attempt to make the world and the Southern Conference forget about the WCU Catamount, the WCU bookstore is offering rewards for all merchandise bearing the former Western logo. All students are encouraged to return their purple and gold and to exchange it at no cost for the new school colors—fuchsia and periwinkle. Monty, the Mountain Boomer, will be out at the bookstore for the remainder of the year signing autographs, posing for pictures, and taking phone numbers. So now, instead of being asked, "What the hell is a Catamount?" we can be asked, "What the hell is a Wood Boomer?" Monthly Specials jsSCJl^^^^ western ■• • y Carolinian Baseball Atop the Conference Weekend Wins Move Team to #28 by Daniel Hooker Following a 4-1 performance last week, which included a three-game sweep of the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute, the Western Carolina Catamount baseball team moved up two slots to become the 28th ranked team in the nation. Western has won 19 of its last 22 games, including one over the fifth ranked Clemson Tigers, in this run into the collegiate baseball poll. The upcoming week's games will be the biggest conference tests for Rodney Hennon's ball club. Today, the Catamounts will face off against the red-hot Furman Paladins in a double-header and then again on Thursday. They are winners of seven of their last ten contests. On Saturday, the Cats will travel to take on the team in which they are currently tied with atop the conference—UNC Greensboro. The Spartans, like the Paladins, have been successful as of late, winning 13 of their last 16 games. They are coming off a two out-of-three win performance against the other conference favorite, The Citadel Bulldogs. Western defeated the struggling VMI Keydets 25-1,8-7, and 11-4 to sweep the three game series last weekend here in Cullowhee. In the series finale, Western fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first before answering with two in the bottom of the first, four in the second, and two in the third to put the Keydets away, winning 11 -4. Senior pitcher Brian Bain improved his record to 6-2 on the year in seven innings of action. He only allowed four runs off of six hits while striking out four. Western stole nine bases, improving its numbers on the year to 93 swipes. Chuck Koone went 2-4 at the plate and scored two runs. He also had a pair of RBIs. Jeff Sziksai only hit 1 -4, but notched four RBIs. Dave McKay went a perfect three for three at the plate and scored a pair of runs. In the late Saturday game, it took a seventh inning rally for the Catamounts to get past the Keydets, 8-7. Eastern Randolph High School product Austin Smithwick smacked a shot through the short-stop and third baseman, scoring third baseman Jeremy Bruce from third. Bruce singled with two outs, then moved to third on a two-base errorby the first baseman. David Pember, who came in pitch in the top of the seventh, got the win for the Cats, his first of the year. Yet, Erik Turnrose and Chris Waters did a good job of securing the game after Brian Hutchinson, the starter, left after two and one-third innings. VMI appeared poised to battle the Cats following the second inning tossing of their head coach, Scott Gines. Western held on. With the Catamounts down 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Martin Barrow hit a three- run homerun to bring Western back. Western had little trouble with VMI in the first game, winning 25-1 over the shell- shocked Keydets. The eighth inning saw 19 Catamount batters stride to the plate and a record-tying 13 runs came across the plate. Also, the bulk of the 16 walks that WCU received came in that inning. Chris Davidson improved his record to 4-1 with the win. He pitched eight innings, relinquishing only one run on 11 hits. Kevin Grieve hit his first homerun of the season in a pinch-hitting role. Last week, behind Chris Waters, West- em defeated mountain rival, UNC-Asheville Bulldogs, while Brian Bain lost to the other Dawgs from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., 8-4.
