  • westerns* • arolmian Catamount Football: The Final Report Card by Donald Costello sports December 4, 1997 ■S 11 "Things have to get worse before they get better." Such an overused cliche, but one that defines the misfortunes ofthe Catamount football squad this season. The misery may have climaxed in Birmingham two weekends ago when the Cats failed to score against the Samford Bulldogs and lost 19-0. It almost hurt to watch the game as neither Josh Brooks, in his final appearance, or Shawn Snyder could move the team. Now we can look toward next year and the season opener in Durham against Duke on September 5. But before we do, let's give a final grade to the 1997 version ofthe Catamounts. Overall, B: While the 3-8 record is nothing to smile about, many good things came out of this season. In 1996, the Catamounts lost six games by ten or more points including a 39-point loss to ETSU at home and a 35-point loss at Marshall. This year, the Cats lost six ofthe contests by ten or fewer points. The only two blowouts were at Georgia Southern, 30-7, and at Samford. The turnovers in 1996 totaled 24, while this year Western was second in the Southern Conference with only 18. In the last seven games of the season, the Cats had only seven turnovers. Offense, B-: Two words: Brad Hoover. More on him later. The offense, well, it had its problems. The quarterback situation was one of the main reasons the offense was stagnant at times. The offense averaged 306.7 yards per game which ranked fifth in the Southern Conference out of nine teams. Receiver Kenya Crooks was tops in the conference until opponents began double- teaming him on nearly every play. Lamont Williams was the second leading receiver on the team with 314 yards on 25 catches. Junior offensive guard Boo Robinson, tackle Dan Best and center Alex Sprinkle were the backbone of the O-line. The downside: holding, holding, holding. It seemed that every down saw a holding penalty called. Quarterbacks, C+: What was supposed to be Josh Brooks' ride into the sunset saw him struggle to get the ball in the hands ofreceivers other than Kenya Crooks. That, Brad Hoover led Western with 717 yards rushing. Photo courtesy WCU Sports Information. combined with some questionable decisions in the pocket, allowed sophomore Shawn Snyder to take the helm after the humiliating defeat to Wofford at Homecoming. Snyder's first two starts saw a heartbreaking defeat in Chattanooga and a blowout of VMI as he moved the offense down the field. That came to an end in the second half of the Elon game and the Catamounts only scored one touchdown in the last ten quarters of the season. The one touchdown came with Brooks leading the offense at the end of the App State loss. Running Backs, A: Brad Hoover, Brad Hoover, Tracy Biggs, Brad Hoover, Brad Hoover, Darius Hooks, Brad Hoover. Get the picture? What a great year by sophomore fullback Brad Hoover who gained 717 yards and seemed to run over anyone who was in his path. Sophomore tailback Tracy Biggs was only 59 yards behind Hoover with 670 yards, including a 73-yard run at the Elon game. Darius Hooks, yet another sophomore, rolled out 364 yards this season that included a Southern Conference Player of the Week award in the second game of the year against the Citadel. Can't wait to see this trio back for two more seasons! Defense, B+: When the Catamount offense was struggling, the defense held them in the game. But too many minutes on the field has its toll. Marcus Bradley was the highlight as he set a new season record for total tackles with 145. Bradley also led the team in sacks (11), had one interception, forced six fumbles and recovered two. Transfer Anthony Jenkins was a great addition to the defensive line as he totaled 55 tackles, 12 for a loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles and two recoveries. Other notables on a defense that allowed 315.6 yards per game compared to last year's 397.5 per game were free safety Eric Johnson, who was second on the team with 128 tackles, junior linebacker Brett Chappell with 79 tackles and four sacks, Cranston Johnson, who had 66 tackles from the strong safety position, and defensive end John Scott, who had eleven tackles for a loss, three sacks and two fumble recoveries. Special Teams, B+: Place kicker/ punter Ken Hinsley averaged 44.17 yards per punt, the highest average in the WCU history. The record-breaking average was tops in the Southern Conference. Hinsley also led the team in scoring with 44 points. Sidekick David Hill did a great job "pooching" the ball when Western needed defensive position. Lamont Williams was the team's leading punt returner with 212 yards including a 65-yard return for a touchdown that sealed the Catamounts' victory over the Citadel. Biggs had 497 yards returning kickoffs with an average of 19.9. Some mental mistakes on special teams keeps this squad from receiving an A. Looking to next year, the Cats will play the three of the first four games on the road and will host App State in the season finale. The Catamounts have a solid core returning next season and have a few holes to fills with Week in Review Football: (11/22) Lost to Samford, 19-0 Volleyball: Southern Conference Tournament (11/23) Championship Game lost to Chattanooga, 3-0 (11/22) Semi-Finals defeated E.
