So says Kevin Spacey in his spectacular performance as—get this—Jonathan Doe, a serial killer who really means well in the newest thriller to hit the big screen, "Seven." Playing the good guys in this film are Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, chasing after Mr. Jonathan Doe for the seven- day run of the movie. The film starts off with a bang, or actually a really BIG bang, when the two officers are put on a case in which an approximately 400-pound man is found dead in his home. The scene of the crime is his kitchen, empty food containers found scattered everywhere; the man apparently having eaten himself to death. But due to some strange marks on his body, the death is considered to be a homicide. Later on, the word "gluttony" was found scrawled in grease behind the refrigerator. This is only the first of the seven deadly sins to be turned against unknowing sinners throughout the film. There are six more mented as the first. In case you don't already know the seven deadly sins (and you will know them after seeing this movie), they are: gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath. Each one of these is brought to life, or death I should say, in a horrifyingly drastic way. I truly enjoyed seeing this movie. Call me sick if you wish, but I was amazed at the effort put into it. The setting was very dark; it rained throughout the whole movie in an unnamed crime-ridden metropolis. Some friends of mine who have seen it said it "disturbed" them, most likely due to the not-so-happy ending which keeps you in suspense for the last 15 minutes of the film. The movie has been compared to "Silence of the Lambs," so all squeamish people be warned. A 400 pound fully nude dead man on an autopsy table is never a pretty sight. Although I do admit to having some doubts about pretty boy Pitt's acting abilities, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they gave him a role that didn't require mu rders to follow, each one just as de- much intelligence. At one point in the I I I I I I movie, Pitt's character (Detective Mills) 1 resorts to reading Cliff's Notes fori Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Dante's I Inferno in order to do research for the 1 crimes being committed. Morgan Free-I man, however, marvelously portrays a™ nearly retired detective Somerset, a very I calm, relaxed, and intelligent individual" constantly bothered by Mill's rash, loud, ■ and overeager personality. Though 11 never would have pictured these two™ actors sharing screen time, they seemed 1 to balance one another out fairly well. ' In the end, Morgan Freeman closes ■ out the movie with a quote by Ernest ■ Hemingway. "The world is a fine place, 1 and worth fighting for," he says in quite" an ironic tone. That line will probably" stay with you for a while after you watch ■ this film; it did with me. Just try to count" up how many times you commit one of" the seven deadly sins in any ordinary day ■ of your life. "Seven" will make you think I about that...at least for a while.
