  • 16 Western Carolinian September 14,1995 Editorial Pot- It May Not Take Your Life but it Can Take Your Future editorial by Lynn Jones Editor in Chief Last week three Cullowhee residents were arrested on charges of possession of processed marijuana, the manufacturing of marijuana with the intent to sell and possession of paraphernalia. All three individuals were affiliated with WCU. One was an alumnus, one a student not registered this semester, and another presently enrolled. Of the charges filed against them, two were felonious. Felony-n.,pl. -nies. -any of various offenses, as murder, burglary, etc., of graver character than those called misdemeanors, esp. those commonly punished in the U.S. by imprisonment for more than a year. -Webster's Unabridged Dictionary Felonies on one's record can and will result in expulsion from school and thereby loss of hours earned, termination of present employment, a deterrent for future employers, and can cause one to become a pauper by the time attorney fees and court fees are paid. This is not a sermon to teach you not to do drugs; on the contrary, I do not feel that any person can tell another what they should do, think, or feel. Only an individual can decide how she/he will live. If one makes the decision to break a Photo courtesy of S altered by WC Staff law of any sort, whether it be drinking and driving, smoking pot, smacking a complete stranger across the face, or opening someone else's mail, that someone should know the consequences of their actions. Drinking and driving is an easy one because we are constantly being inundated with those "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk" advertisements, MADD commer- SGA President Laverty Addresses Fellow Students cials. The list could go on, but it wont. What young people aren't told is how easy it is to get busted. Did you know that if an RA sees a pot seedling growing in your windowsill and/or closet and reports it, you could charged with a felony? AF-E-L-O-N-Y! If you give a pal a joint, you can be arrested. According to the director of Public Safety, Gene McAbee, in 1994 there were 3 drug related violations on campus. From January '95 to July '95 there have been 7 drug violations on campus. The number is small but it has doubled Dear fellow students, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the administration, faculty, and students of Western Carolina University back to Cullowhee. My warmest greetings are extended to the incoming freshman, transfers, and new faculty. I look foward to meeting and working with all of you in hopes of making this year the best in Western's history. The first step in achieving this goal is uniting WCU as a campus and a community. This year, through my role in our Student Government Association, I intend to recognize and act on the opinions and issues of all the members of the Western Carolina University community. I feel that actively seeking a.variety of views will enable me to better represent the student body, and therefore become a successful SGA representative. I strongly encourage you to approach me with any of your concerns. Some of the reoccurring issues I would like to address formally this year are: the ever-present parking dilemma, change in the visitation policy, and improving campus recycling. I am also interested in establishing a shuttle service between parking areas and producing a SGA Spring Fling festival. Of course, these are only ideas; without the support of the student body virtually none of this will be possible. I sincerely thank all of you for your continued support. I wish nothing but the best for Western in the coming year. Become involved with a cause, sing with the choir, play rugby, attend a performance. Western is what you make of it. I look forward to serving the Western Carolina University community over the next year. Do not hesitate to contact SGA with any problem that may arise. I wish you well; be kind to one another. Thank You, Jessica Laverty SGA President in less than a year. It is obvious that these laws need to be changed. They are drastic, unrealistic, and extremely harmful. The social perception is very casual about the use of marijuana. It is accepted by the majority while the legal perception allows for no leniency. Why, does a person's life have to be over because they choose to smoke for relaxation as opposed to having a drink? How many murders have you read about that named the gunman as a crazed stoner? Until these laws are changed, any person chosing to use Marijuana should know the consequences they may face in the near future. Interesting Facts from NORML literature NORML-National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws "Marijuana prohibition is counter productive and un-American," said Richard Cowan, National Director of NORML. $7,000,000,000 are wasted every year hunting down, arresting and incarcerating marijuana consumers. Every comprehensive objective analysis during the past 100 years has determined that the laws which prohibit the consumption of marijuana are far more damaging to the individual and to society than the use of the substance itself. On Feb. 18, 1994 the US Court of Appeals upheld the drug enforcement administration's 1992 decision to refuse to make marijuana legally available for medical purposes.
