A little over three weeks ago, these teams competed in the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Women's squad walked away with a second place finish, while the Men's team placed fifth. This was a disappointing finish after placing second in the meet last year. Both teams are looking to improve on their indoor performances and compete for the outdoor title in late April. They started their quest for Conference titles Saturday, as they kicked off their outdoor season. The hot weather did not seem to hamper the Cats. The Women's team posted three new school records. Rahma Mateen set a record mark of five feet eight and one- half inches in the high jump, en route to winning the event. Wykesha Bailey placed fourth in the 100 hurdles, and set a new school record with a time of 15.07 seconds. The Women's 4 x 100 meter relay team crushed their competition and the school record. Their closest competition, Eastern Kentucky University, was over three seconds behind. Rahma Mateen, Wykesha Bailey, Angela Rowe, and Daree Thompson will all have their names scripted into the record books for their performance in the 4 x 200. Mateen, Machon Hill, Rowe, and Thompson also blazed by their competition and won the 4 x 100 meter relay. The 4 x 400 squad of Bailey, Emily Redmon, Thompson, and Rowe placed second in a heated race against East Tennessee State. Another notable performance on the women's side was turned in from Freshman Lashay Jackson. Jackson, coming of her victory at the Southern Conference meet, placed second in the shot put. Other results showed just how well the Women performed. Long jump: Machon Hill, second place; javelin: Angela Rowe, second place; and in the discuss: Zondra Jackson, first place. The Men's team showed their hand to the other 17 teams competing. They brought back to Cullowhee three second place finishes. The 4 xlOO team of Jonathan Jenkins, Jonathan Boyce, Ken Jackson, and Craig Aiken finished second. The 4 x 200 relay team of Jenkins, Clarence Edwards, Jackson, and Jonathan Boyce was also the second team to cross the line. Rounding out the Catamounts' second place finishes was the 4 x 400 meter relay team. Jackson, David Chambless, Boyce, and Len Henke placed second behind the host Clemson Tigers. This weekend the Men's and Women's teams are traveling to Gainesville, Florida, for the Florida Relays.
