Wake sweeps WCU Invite Clemson's Kauffman sets course record Derek Smolik Staff Reporter Wake Forest won both the men's and women's overall titles in the seventh annual Western Carolina University Invitational in Cullowhee last Saturday. Wake edged Clemson by a score of 42-43 to win the women's title, while their men's team won by a larger margin of 46-57. The individual winner for the men was Mike Kauffman of Clemson, who set the men's meet record with a time of 24:58. The finish of the men's race was a sprint to the line between Kauffman and Seamus Powers of East Tennessee State. Kauffman won the sprint by two seconds as Powers finished in 25:00. Both runners easily beat the old WCU Invitational 5-mile record of 25:36. The women's race also saw the course record fall as Nicole Stevenson of Wake Forest ran a 17:40 to win the race and beat the old record of 17:41. Coming in second for Wake Forest was Jen Finnegan with a time of 18:13. Gail Pennachio of Furman was third with a time of 18:18. Western Carolina's men's team was led by Donnie Reuss' ninth place time of 26:19, just 19 seconds back was Matt Grey who ran a 26:38 to finish in 16th place overall. Turner Norris was 21st overall with a time of 26:55; Kevin Mclntire ran a 27:55 to finish in 35th, and Max Boswell ran a 38th place time of 28:08. "I felt good, this is the best shape I've been in this early in the year," Reuss said after the race. "Teamwise, we're in good shape for the first meet." Rita Roberts led the women's team with a time of 19:03, good for 14th place overall.
