Tennis teams starts season Bulldogs top error-prone Cats Derek Smolik Sports Editor The University of North Carolina-Asheville took advantage of four Catamount errors and eight walks to defeat the Cats 10-5. Western (3-3) had a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning before the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs on only one hit to take the lead. Freshman starter Derek Cockrell had allowed only two hits going into the inning in his first collegiate start. An error by second baseman John Connolly allowed Brian Kelly to reach base. After a walk Cockrell allowed his only hit in the inning. Trevor Moore hit a high homerun to centerfield that was aided by the strong wind. The shot by Moore gave UNC-A the lead at 4-3. Two walks and an error scored arun and Cockrell was pulled in favor of Ryan Hearrell. Hearrell hit the next batter with a pitch to load the bases. Another error brought in the seventh and final run of the inning. Hearrell got Moore to strike out to end the inning. The Bulldogs struck again the next inning. With one out and one on, UNC-A got three straight singles, scoring two runs and advancing the lead to 10-3. "I'm embarrased with our effort out there today," said Head Coach Keith LeClair. "We didn't come out ready to play today." Western tried to come back in the ninth inning. Phillip Grundy led off with a sharp single to left field. Marc Striker walked to put runners at first and second with no outs. Rob Doherty came up next and grounded into a double-play. That left Grundy at third with two outs. Pinch-hitterMike Hilton kept the inning alive with a pop-fly single that fell just between the shortstop and leftfielder. Grundy scored on the play to cut the lead to 10-4. Eric Whitson came up next and doubled to left, scoring Hilton and cutting the Asheville lead to 10-5. Nelson Jenkins was finally able to shut the door on the Cats when he struck out Mike Pritchard for the final out. Jenkins relieved starter Rob Masse who held the Cats to only three hits after the fourth inning. Masse struck out two and walked three in eight innings of work. "We just have to get back on the horse, get some practice in and getready for Saturday," LeClair commented. The Cats travel to Charleston this weekend to open their conference schedule with a series aginst the Citadel. Stephanie Burton Sports Writer Western Carolina University's women's tennis team got off to a winning start against Mars Hill in Cullowhee, February 17th winning their first match by a 5-2 margin. The match was started in ritualistic fashion by WCU head coach Fred Weinman. He announced the players and followed with a warm welcome to former WCU tennis coach, David Johnson, who left the Cats last year to take over as head coach at Mars Hill. Despite the frigid temperatures and roaring winds, the matches began when the players took to the courts. Leading off at the number one seed for WCU was Lisa Ashe who beat Michelle Kuchta 6-4, 6-3. At number two, Kristen Maxey played an important role in WCU's victory against Mars Hill when she came through in the third set to beat Caroline Duboc 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Playing at the number three seed, Kerri Jackson was defeated by Jennifer Schommer. Playing at the number five seed, Kathy Crowley defeated Amy Parson's 6-1,6-0. And finally, at the number six seed, Jenny Thomas defeated Dana Hawkin 6-0, 6-0. The turning point Wednesday was when Kristen Maxey won her match against Duboc. " I knew I had to win" said Maxey. "It was for the team". The Lady Cats played well in their doubles matches as well. Kerri Jackson and Kathy Crowley teamed up to defeat Amy Parsons and Dana Hawkin. Shannon Doherty and Jenny Thomas defeated Mars Hill's Jennifer Schommer and Amy Ross. The Men's first match against Lincoln Memorial, Saturday in Cullowhee went equally well. They started off with a forfeit from LM in the number five seed which automatically gave WCU two wins, one doubles and one singles match. This didn't mean that WCU's 5-2 win came easy, however. James Gasparini played at the number one seed followed by Andrew Randall, Neoclis Neocleous, Terry Coles, Adam Hades and Shane Walker. The match proved to be a big win for the men's team since they were defeated by Lincoln Memorial 5-4 last year. "This certainly indicates improvement," said Coach Weinman. "It was a very positive start for us, but we have a lot of hard matches to follow". Monday, February 22nd, the men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Atlanta to confront Dekalb. The men continued to show their strength beating the seventh ranked junior college in the nation. The men won their match by a score of 8-1. The women fell short, losing 6-3, but not by much. Laura Waitsman and Lisa Ashe both dominated their singles matches and teamed up to play just as strong in their doubles match, giving WCU their three points. Shannon Doherty, Kerri Jackson, Kathy Crowley, and Jenny Thomas, all played to a third set, only to lose after several long points. "We were all disappointed," commented Weinman, "but the experience this early will help to guarantee us greater success later in the season". Shannon Doherty later said, "We played really hard and this will be to our advantage when we are put in similar situations later in the season." Marshall ran out to an early 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game before the Cats started to whittle away at the Marshall lead. A 6-2 run mid-way through the half got the Cats to within 20-18. The Herd ^^■••^■■■^■••■■■■■■l then responded with an 8-2 run to get the lead back up to eight.
