  • Sports The Western Carolinian Page 9 Thursday, November 2, 1989 Paladins Outgun Cats at Homecoming, 17-3 Perryn Oglesby Associate Editor Behind a strong running game and the timely passing of quarterback Frankie DeBusk, Furman upped their record to 4-0 in the Southern Conference by defeating Western Carolina 17-3. In front of a Homecoming crowd of 13,227, the fourth largest in WCU history, the Catamounts were aiming to add to their 3-0 home unbeaten streak. The task would be a difficult one, because the victims would be the defending 1-AA National Champions, Furman. Furman was coming into Cullowhee riding on a 13-game wining streak over division 1 -AA teams and ranked third in the nation. Western had been playing well and had hopes of an upset. Furman had been rolling, but suffered a key injury to starting tailback Bobby Daugherty against Wofford the week before. This injury put the pressure on freshman reserve Carl Tremble and senior fullback Dwight Sterling. The two combined for 134 yards in the first quarter against the Catamounts to spark Furman to an early lead. On the opening possession of the game, the Catamounts took over on their own 20-yard line. Seven plays later, Anthony Bare was in for his first (f nolo oy Jen Mason) The Cats' running game was held to 80 yards by a strong Furman defense punt of the day. Furman quickly took charge to set up a 20-yard field goal by Glen Connally. The kick was good and Furman led 3- 0. Western then took over with 7:34 to play in the first quarter and moved the ball into Paladin territory. The drive stalled and the Catamounts were forced to punt once again. Anthony Bare's punt tied Furman down on their 12-yard line. This bad field position did not bother Furman. The Paladins mounted an 87- yard drive that culminated in a 29- yard touchdown run by Tremble. Mike Wood added the extra point and Furman was ahead 10-0. The first quarter ended with a dominant offensive performance by the Paladins. The Furman defense played equally well by holding the Catamounts to 69 total yards to Furman's 169 total yards. Paladin quarterback DeBusk was perfect, going 2-2 for 37 yards while Cottrell was 3- 4 for 31 yards in the quarter. Furman started the second quarter with a bang when DeBusk connected on a 64-yard pass to Brad Stephens for a Paladin touchdown. The drive took only six plays and covered 89 yards. Connally added the extra Cross-Country Team Places 5th in Huntington Perryn Oglesby Associate Editor Western Carolina University's Cross-Country teams went to Huntington, West Virginia last Saturday to compete in the Southern Conference Cross-Country Championship Meet. The teams have been doing well this year and Coach Danny Williamson expected a good performance once again. Before the weekend, Coach Williamson had this to say. "I think our men's team has a good chance to have their best finish ever. I can see us finishing as high as second if everyone can run the kind of race they are capable of running. If they don't, we could finish last." Western did not finish first, but did not finish last either. The man's team performed well, as expected. Shawn Leather- wood led the way for the Cats with a 7th place finish and an All-Conference honor in the 5-mile course. The team as a whole finished 5th in the eight-team meet. This finish leaves good hopes for the future because the men's team is mainly made up of underclassmen. Other members of the Cross-Country team who fared well include John White, Jason Witworth, Robert Marcie, Chuck Bastian, Eddie Clark, Devin Bau- com, and Edmond McClendon. They finished with times of 26:41, 27:01, 27:26, 28:23, 29:59, 30:51, and 31:06 respectively. The WCU women's Cross-Country team was not expected to challenge for the Con ference championship last Saturday. Appalachian State was the odds-on favorite and defending champions. As expected, the Lady Mountaineers won their second straight Southern Conference Championship. East Tennessee State finished second, with Marshall, Furman, and Western pulling up the rear. In the men's meet, Appalachian State and ETSU tied for first. Marshall, VMI, Western, UT Chattanooga, Furman, and The Citadel finished 3rd through 8th. Appalachian State Coach Al Fer- eshetian was named Southern Conference Cross-Country Coach of the Year following the meet. He coached his team to several first-place finishes on the year and tied forthe Conference championship. THE CATAMOUNT point and the score was 17-0. Western came back to mount their best drive of the day following the Furman score. The drive ended with a 37-yard field goal by Clay Cox. With only 47 seconds left in the half, Furman ran out the clock and settled for a 17-3 halftime. The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team doing well offensively. Frankie DeBusk is now 18-2 as the Furman starting quarterback. The Paladins are still unbeaten in division 1 - AA play and are well on their way to a Southern Conference first-place finish. Western falls to 1-2-1 in the Conference and still has a tough schedule to play in their final three games. Western never could get on track offensively and only totaled 80 yards on the ground. Starting runningback Carlton Terry played sparingly because of a shoulder injury, while backup Andra Rosbor was also out with fractured ribs. According to Coach Dale Strahm, "We could never sustain anything offensively. Part of the problem was our runningback situation. However, let's give credit where credit is due. Furman's defense is outstanding and it was at its best today." . Volleyball Lady Cats Down UNCC, UTC, Snatch SoCon First Place From Furman Kathleen Murphy Contributing Writer The Western Carolina Volleyball team is on a roll. The Lady Cats have compiled a 4-1 record over the past week. The week started slow with a loss to Georgia State in a 5- game match. As the Cats worked desperately to hang on, the crowd of about 250 chanted and cheered for a Cat Victory. .Although disappointed that the Cats lost, the crowd returned Saturday to see them route conference rival UT Chattanooga and Sun Belt Conference rival UNC Charlotte, both in 3-game sweeps. These wins gave WCU momentum going into their show down with conference-leading Furman (6-0). The Lady Cats pounded the Paladins 15-3, 15 13, and 15-5. That win placed the Cats in sole possession of first place in the conference. On Thursday, October 26, the Cats traveled to Atlanta to face ACC rival Georgia Tech The Lady Cats dominated the Yellow Jackets in 4 games, 8-15 15-13, 15-11, and 15-6. Coach Trish Howell called the victory "an overall team effort." The Lady Cats are playing extremely well. With Regina Brown and Jackie Chang leading the way, the Cats are hoping to regain the Southern Conference Championship. The Lady Cats play the Clemson Tigers on Halloween in Reid Gym.
