Dr. Karl Heider, an anthropolgist at the University of South Carolina, will visit WCU on February 28 & March 1. He will deliver a public lecture, '"Dead Birds' Then & Now", on Tuesday, february 28 at 7pm in the Natural Science Auditorium. The film "Dead Birds", made in 1961, is a cinematographic interpretation of the life of the Dani, a culture in the mountains of West New Guinea which at that time was virtually uninfluenced by the outside world. The film will be shown the night before Dr. Heider's lecture, on Monday, February 27, at 7pm in the NSA. Dr. Heider has done extensive ethnographic research among the Dani, and has published numerous books & articles on their culture, as well as on ethnographic filmmaking. His talk will focus on changes in the Dani culture since they were firat studied by the Harvard-Peabody Expedition in 1961-1963. Dr. Heider's visit is sponsored by the WCU Visiting Scholar program, the Departmant of Geosciences & Anthropology, and the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
