  • The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, December 1, 1988 BTE Attends Cicely Tyson Speech in s<f Defe"se V^l&SS lO DC KnOXVille Taught Frederick Mason STAFF WRITER On January 19 and 20th, the Black Theatre Ensemble, headed by Professor Al Wiggins, and accompanied by Starlette Craig and Dr. Loeffler, traveled to Knoxville Tennessee to see and hear famous actress Cicely Tyson speak on behalf of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the celebration of his leadership. The ensemble arrived in Knoxville and went to the University of Tennessee as special guests of the University. On the campus were over 25,000 students, and on this particular night, Cicely Tyson would not be the only star there. As the BTE was enjoying the first three rows of the auditorium reserved for them in the crowded room, another famous person by the name of Alex Haley entered the auditorium. The ensemble took great delight in having Mr. Haley sit with them for Cicely Tyson's presentation. Many people came from the back of the auditorium to take pictures of Alex Haley and get autographs from him, but once the presentation began, it was all Cicely's. The moment she stepped from backstage a thundering applause sounded as all stood to recognize the movie star. Cameras were working overtime to catch a photo of Cicely as she walked across the stage, giving photographers the time they needed to take pictures. As the crowd sat back down Cicely joked about how she was afraid that there wasn't going to be a full house because elsewhere on campus was the Heartbreak Concert, with New Edition, Bobby Brown and Al. B. Sure. Cicely Tyson spoke to the crowd briefly about herself and the tour she was currently involved with, traveling to college campuses to give the presentation that she would give tonight. She began with a question and answer session. Many people took the opportunity of a lifetime to ask a question, and even two members of the BTE were allowed to ask Cicely a question. The well- known actress answered each question as best she could, but if someone asked her a question which she was going to answer later in the second half of her presentation, she would say "Second half. The second half was the part to which Cicely read and interpreted a number of black poems about the trials and tribulations of blacks as they struggled to gain freedom. The crowd was moved by the inflection and style demonstrated by Ms. Tyson as she brought each poem to life. As Cicely ended her presentation, she exited as she had entered with the thundering applause and flashing lights of cameras. Independently Owned Galaxy Food Centers We're Your Super Saver Store!
