  • Arts & Entertainment The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, July 14,1988 Babysitting Experiences: A Movie Review by Holly Wheatley Anyone who has ever babysat or any guy who has ever had a crush on his babysitter will surely appreciate the movie Adventures in Babysitting, now available on video cassette. The movie, starring Elisabeth Shue as Chris, begins with Chris getting ready for her big date with her new boyfriend Mike. But when he comes to pick her up, he cancels the date, claiming his little sister is sick. So Chris ends up spending the night babysitting the Anderson kids, Brad (who is 15, and has a major crush on Chris) and his little sister Sara. While at the Anderson's, Chris gets a call from her best friend Brenda, who has run away from home and is at the bus station in the city (Chicago). Brenda spent all her money on cabfare to take her to the bus station and wants Chris to pick her up. Chris just can't leave her best friend hanging around the bus station, and she can't leave the kids alone (they threatened to blackmail her if she wouldn't let them come along) so she, Brad, Sara, and Daryl (Brad's best friend) all pile into the station wagon to go pick up Brenda, even though she isn't supposed to take her mom's car into the city. And this is where the adventures begin!! Beginning with a tire blowout on the freeway heading into the city, and ending with Chr\s and the kids passing their parents on the way home ("How fast do your parents drive, Brad?" "Around 40mph." "Fine, we'll do 80.") you won' t believe all the things that happen in between!!! The movie is one hilarious comedy/ adventure you won't want to miss. Although the title sounds somewhat juvenile, this movie is entertaining for audiences of all ages. Rated PG-13 and lasting 108 minutes, this movie is available at local video stores. Brad Kimzey Photo Jimmy Buffett's Carowinds Performance Ttorns Out to be a Full House by Martha McAfee Editor Jimmy Buffet performed a concert on his "Hot Water" tour in Carowinds Paladium on July 10at7pm. The sold-out concert gave the crowd a sense of energetic enthusiasm. Favorites like "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger In Paradise" as well as new releases from his "Hot Water" album, enlightened the audience with sing-alongs. Buffet is noted for songs in which his audience can participate. He likes to achieve a loud and exciting crowd, which was sure accomplished on Sunday night. Buffet makes an annual appearance at Carowinds; however, this year the show ended before the crowd was ready to leave. He came back for one encore as opposed to his usual two or three. He returned to the stage as he watched the audience make shark fins with their hands and wave them above their heads. The crowd loved this hit "Fins" because they were totally involved. Buffet would sing "Fins to the left" as all fins would sway left, and "fins to the right" and all fins would sway right Buffett's songs always seem to be related to the same themes: the beach, mixed drinks, captains and pirates, and hanging out with friends. The music has a special beat. It's not loud hard music, but medium tone celebrating music. I've been to several concerts, and even though I am a Jimmy Buffett fan, I've never been to one where the crowd is so active. Woodsy Owl says Stash Your Trash Give a hoot Don't pollute. MUSICAL NOTES WITH DEF LEPPARD by Michael Jones Well folks here I go again. Our subject this issue? Def Leppard and their HYSTERIA album (Mercury 830 675 1). Since its first single ("Women") was released, cuts from this album have continued and will continue to do well on the Billboard Hot 100's Singles Chart. This week HYSTERIA ranks #2 on the Billboard TOP POP Albums Chart and the current HYSTERIA release "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is at #3 on the Hot 100's Singles Chart. "Women", "Hysteria", and now "Pour Some Sugar On Me" have done very well on the charts, but the second release off of the HYSTERIA LP, "Animal", did not rank above 75 on Billboard. Experts say that it was released too early after the success of "Women." The next singles release to look out for is "Excitable." The song has the same basic style as other releases from HYSTERIA, and will do very well largely due to the success of "Hysteria", the single, and "Pour Some Sugar On Me." While "Excitable" is a good song, in the opinion of this writer, it does not have the same musical quality, or the style that "Hysteria" did. It will most likely do ALL RIGHT on the Billboard, but it is very unlikely that it will enjoy the success of its predecessors from the HYSTERIA album. I also predict that this will be the last single release from the HYSTERIA album. But don't be sad a new album is most likely just around the corner for Def Leppard. Those arc my views. WCU Players Present "The Perfect Party" WCU Players will present A.R. Gurney Jr.'s comedy "The Perfect Party" on three evenings, Monday-Wednesday, July 18-20, in Niggli Theatre on campus. Curtain time is 8pm in the air-conditioned theatre. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, senior citizens and children. Tony, played by James True, Jr. of Cary, NC, tries to create the perfect party and gets involved in all kinds of pressures and misadventures that such an effort creates. Other cast members are Angela Worley of Canton as Sally, Tony's wife; Heather Pittillo of Sylva as Lois, a society reviewer; and Timothy Bolick of Hickory and Sabrina Davis of Canton as Wes and Wilma(neighbors). "The Perfect Party" is directed and designed by Richard S. Beam of the WCU speech and theatre arts faculty. The play has been hailed by the New York Times' Olive Barnes as "dazzling entertaining." However, it has language and situations that may not be suitable for children. ***Next Weeks Album Spotli te: Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation*** BILLBOARD MAGAZINE'S TOP 10 SINGLES 1- CHEAP TRICK THE FLAME EPIC 2- PEBBLES MERCEDES BOY MCA 3- DEF LEPPARD POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME MERCURY 4- INXS NEW SENSATION ATLANTIC 5- MICHAEL JACKSON DIRTY DIANNA EPIC 6- POISON NOTHIN' BUT A GOOD TIME ENIGMA 7- DEBBIE GIBSON FOOLISH BEAT ATLANTIC 8- RICHARD MARX HOLD ON TO THE NIGHTS EMI-MANN 9- BRUCE HORNSBY THE VALLEY ROAD RCA 10- ALB.
