State and National Ihe Western Carolinian 3 Thursday, October 9, 1986 Students for Sanford: With North Carolina's Senatorial election a month away, a record sixty colleges statewide have formed Students for Sanford chapters and rallied thousands of students behind Terry Sanford's bid for the U.S. Senate. Started in early September, Students for Sanford is an aggressive effort to solicit volunteers for the campaign and appeal to college voters statewide. Under the stewardship of Shep Movie and Kevin Monroe, former student body presidents at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill, the organization has established campaign committees on more North Carolina campuses than any previous effort. "This is an unprecedented effort," says Moyle. "We're finding an energy and enthusiasm we've never found before." In addition to nearly tripling the previous record of 21 campuses organized, Moyle says his grassroots effort is trying "anything new and different" to send Sanford to the Senate. These initiatives include a four-minute music video and a "video rap session" in which Sanford Sixty Campuses Strong discusses issues with student leaders from eight North Carolina universities. "In a great many ways this campaign is about young people and their future," said Sanford in a September 17th press conference held to introduce the group. "I have spent a career working on priorities that I believe are the central concern of the young." As North Carolina's governor from 1961-65, Sanford initiated a statewide system of community colleges and technical institutions and created special schools for the gifted and underachieves. Sanford was ranked one of the ten best American governors of this century by a Harvard University study, was president of Duke University from 1969-1985, and was credited by US News and World Report for bringing Duke into its ranking among the nation's top six universities. "Students around the state are in an upswell," says Monroe, a resident of Lillington, NC. "Anyone who says this is not an exciting race hasn'tseen what the students are doing. Every place we've looked for support we've just found a gusher of enthusiasm." Officials say the leftist government wouldn't honor a U.S. Embassy reauest for access to the survivor, Eugene Hasenfus of Marinette, Wisconsin, and for the remains and personal effects of the two Americans who died in the crash. Nicaragua says Hasenfus may be put on trial. A military official didn't say what charges might be filed against him. But the Sandanista government claims he was part of a CIA operation delivering weapons to the "Confras" -- the anti-Sandanista rebels. A man in Magnolia, Arkansas, says he thinks his son was one of the three crewmembers killed when the plane was shot down. Wallace Blaine Sawyer, Sr. says he hasn't been contacted by the government- but he thinks his son, Wallace Blaine Sawyer, Jr., was on the plane. Nicaragua says the other dead American was named William Cooper. A Miami-based charter company with links to the CIA says Sawyer used to work for the company - Souther Air Transport. Souther Air was owned by the CIA from 1960 until 1973. Texas congressman Henry Gonzalez says another Southern Air cargo plane tha crashed Saturday near San Antonio was on a mission to supply the Contras. The CIA has denied any involvement. Spokesmen for the Kremlin say Soviet leader Gorbachev is hoping an agreement on at least one nuclear arms issue will come out of his meeting with Reagan this weekend. And house speaker Tip O'Neill says he thinks that's possible. O'Neill told reporters today that he doesn't think they'd be holding the summit so quickly unless an agreement was imminent. The President has said the meeting is only intended to lay the groundwork for a future summit. To»t!
