  • David Boss squats 650 pounds-on a slow day. Sports and Money do not Mix Sports fans, your days may be numbered. There is an increasing trend in both college and professional sports to ignore the fan and go for the money. Two cases in point: the current baseball strike, and the Southern Conference's decision to move the basketball tournament from Roanoke, Va., lo Charleston, W.Va. The baseball strike brought the season to a halt after the pennant races were just beginning to warm up. Couple this with the fact that attendance was at a record high and that the strike was held over free- agent compensation (which involves relatively few persons in the sport) and one begins to see how- ridiculous the whole matter is. The entire season ground to a halt over something that should've been taken care of earlier or could've been taken care of after the season was over. Many articles have been printed over the greediness of the players, managers, and owners, and many people are beginning to agree with that attitude: some of us are of the opinion that they're always looking for something to strike about, and that school of thought is gaining many supporters, too. The Southern Conference had played around with the idea of having the conference basketball tournament in Asheville this year instead of Charleston or Roanoke. When it came down to dollars and cents, the conference heirarchy decided to go with Charleston. It's great as far as money is concerned, but it kills the fans. The Southern Conference is not the richest conference in the country, and it's fans (especially the students), are usually not rolling in the bucks either. but it's basketball fans are nuts, as typified by Western's fans. There are a lot of people who live and breathe basketball November-March, and the three- way tie for first place last year exemplifies the competitive quality of Southern Conference basketball. To put it simply, the fans like to watch their teams. If the ((inference tournament were held in Asheville, it would cut off a minimum of 200 miles worth of driving for fans from UTC, ETSU, Davidson, WCU, ASU, and 250-350 miles off of the Citadel and Furman s fans journeys. The only teams to really benefit from the move arc Marshall and VMI. So once again, the fans are hurt. More far-sighted leaders are needed in the sports market today. People who will realize it's the fans, and not the money, who are responsible for their existence in the present and their well-being in the future. WESTERN CLASSIFIEDS AM-FM Ford radio, $50. The Catamount baseball team finished atop the Southern Conference baseball standings, giving WCU it's first title since joining the conference in 1977, and the women's softball team won a spot in the first-ever national Slo-Pitch championship tournament. The Catamounts put on a late season surge that produced a ten-game win streak and a share of the Southern Conference championship. 13 individual and team records were broken in the 25-14 campaign and yielded player of the year and coach of the year honors. The baseball Cats were back in fifth place in the conference stadnings with three weeks remaining in the season, but reeled off seven straight conference wins and ended regular season play tied with East Tennessee State and Marshall for first place.
