  • Page 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April 17,1980 Organizations and events Kayaking clinic Last Minute Productions will sponsor a Beginning ■Kayaking Clinic on April 17, 24, and May 1. The clinic will be held on the Tuckaseigee River on Thursday afternoons from 1:30-5:30. The cost for the clinic is $5 for students, $10 for non-students which includes equipment, transportation, and instruction. Registration is being held in the Last Minute Productions office in the U.C. crafts by WCU students completed the decor. Students currently involved in the home management program who will serve as hostesses at Sunday evening's open house are Sue Landefeld, Edna DeAngelis, Andrea Rhodarmerand Kathy Bradshaw. Other student hostesses are home economics graduate students Paulette Williams and Maisielin Gordon, both Jamaican students who reside in the facility's living quarters. The WCU School of Technology and Applied Science and department of home economics cordially invite all to attend the open house. Thomas to speak Dr. Emory M. Thomas will speak on "The Southerner as UnAmerican" at Belk Auditorium on the WCU campus April 22 at 8 p.m. A member of the University of Georgia History faculty, Thomas is the author of The Confederacy as a Revolutionary Experience, and The Confederate Nation, 1861-1865. He will also give a seminar on "Recent Trends in Confederate Historiography" in the Catamount Room of the University Center at 3 p.m. on April 22. Admission to both events is free to all. Flight training SPGS positions open SECT in action The Summer Program for Gifted Students is now accepting applications for the following positions: Dormitory Counselor; Instructor in Gymnastics, Tennis, Volleyball/Soccer, Clogging and Computer. If interested check with the Summer Program for Gifted Students, Killian 216 or 217 and/or the CAP Center. Hearing screening The National Student Speech and Hearing Association is having a free hearing screening April 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Killian Annex. All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend. It will only take a few minutes of your time. For further information contact Kelly Edens at the Speech and Hearing Clinic. Open house There will be an open house Sunday, April 20, from 6 until 8 p.m. at WCU's home management house to debut the recently completed renovations. The two-story house, located just above Harrill Residence Hall on Dick's Gap Road in Cullowhee, is the former residence of Dr. and Mrs. William Ernest Bird, former dean and acting president of WCU. Although the home management program actually occupied the house two years ago, the refurbishment, under the direction of David Harrison and Francile Waters, both WCU assistant professors of home economics, has just been concluded. The house has been re-carpeted throughout thanks to a donation by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry O'Mahony of Dalton, Ga., owners of DOM, Inc., carpet manufacturers. Broyhill Industries of Lenoir provided special consideration on the purchase of new furniture, and art and The Western Carolina University Student Emergency Care Team is a division of the University's Health Services System. The team is a totally volunteer ambulance service which works in cooperation with Graham Infirmary. The members, who are students of Western, are North Carolina Certified Emergency Medical Technicians and possess experience in various areas of the emergency medical care field. The service provides 24 hour, 7 days a week ambulance coverage to the campus and surrounding area except when the University is not in session. This coverage includes students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Also a vital responsibility of the team is to provide medical stand-by at University functions upon request throughout the school year. This stand-by involves athletic and club activities. We are here for you so do not hesitate to call upon us. In the event of an emergency, contact the Infirmary at (227)-7430 or (227)-7431. Give the nurse your name, nature of the emergency, location of the emergency (be specific), and the number from which you are calling. SUMMER EMPLOYMENT Many summer camps, both in North Carolina and in other parts of the country continue to have openings for camp counselors for the summer. In fact, several camps will be on campus in the next several weeks to interview people for summer positions. If you are interested, come by the Placement Office for further information. Expedition Research has just sent us information regarding a variety of summer expeditions as well as opportunities for employment for summer in some specialized areas. Going to be on campus this summer? Looking for a part-time job? We, in the Placement Office are starting to get information about jobs on-campus this summer, some of which are full time jobs, If interested, come by the CAP Center in Bird Building. There will be a private pilots ground school taught at Jackson County Airport starting May 5 and running until June 30. This course will consist of all the pertinent subject matter necessary to pass the FAA written exam for private pilots. Instructors for this course will be Frank DiCillo and Ernest Jones.
