  • APRIL 19, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 13 newsbriefs newsbriefs Two WCU students have won scholarships totalling $1,500 in an essay contest sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers in Virginia and the Carolinas. Jack M. Trinks of Marion received $1,000 for his essay, which tied for second nlace in the annual contest. Sandra Saunders of Franklin won $500 for her fourth-place entry. The topic of both essays is "Plastics and Energy—Conserver or Consumer?" Trinks, a WCU senior, is majoring in English. A 1975 graduate of McDowell High School, he is a member of the national business fraternity Phi Beta Lambda, the She is the recipient of a Helen Ramsey Brown Scholarship at WCU and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Saunders of Franklin Rt. 9. In the contest, the pair competed against students from seven other universities in Virginia and the Carolinas. WCU English Club, and the North Carolina English Teachers Association. He has been a staffer on The Western Carolinian, the yearbook, and the literary magazine, "The Nomad." He currently serves as director of public information for the WCU Student Government Association. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Maxwell Trinks of Marion Rt. 5. Miss Saunders is a senior majoring in English education. She is secretary—treasurer of the WCU English Club and a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the National Council of Teachers of English. A native of Rhode Island, she attended the University of Rhode Island before transferring to WCU in 1977. WASHINGTON—The government is trying to find out whether remedial educaiton will help young people who volunteer for the armed forces but fail the aptitude tests. A pilot program will be tested in Houston, Texas. Memphis, Tennessee, and Albany, New York, the defense department and U.S. Office of Education announced Tuesday. "Many young people who seek enlistment in the military services fail the mental eligibility test given to all applicants because their basic educaitonal skills are not adequate," the announcement said. The test program will "determine the extent to which remedial education will help these young people to qualify for enlistment."
