  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/JANUARY 18, 1979 sports Cats split four games, now 7-2 in conference The Western Carolina Catamounts, in the heart of their basketball schedule, had a busy week of action playing four games since last Thursday, winning two and losing two. It was like a roller coaster—the Cats going up and down—playing some of their best basketball and then some of their worst. After the 104-74 thrashing of UNC-G, the team faced one of the biggest challenges in their short Division I history by taking on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets January 11 in Reid Gym. It was the game everyone in Cullowhee had been waiting for as Tech was a preseason Top Twenty team in some magazine polls. Unfortunately, WCU's poor shooting and untimely turnovers, along with an overall sluggish performance by the team and the 4,002 Reid Gym crowd, helped the Rambling Wreck to a 72-50 victory over the Cats. Down by only five, 24-19 with 7:19 in the first half, the Cats went cold as Tech pulled away for a 38-25 halftime lead. Lead by Tico Brown's 12 points Tech shot a hot 63 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. WCU was able to cut the margin to seven (46-39) on Greg Dennis' 15 foot jumper with 12:12 left, but could get no closer than that. Tech led by as much as 24, 70-46, with two minutes remaining. Sammy Drummer led the visitors with 16 points, Brown had 14, Lenny Horton 15 and former WNC player of the year Rob Noyes of Madison had 15, mostly from the inside. Greg Dennis was the only Catamount in double figures with 14 points, as Bryant Pagan came off the bench to score eight points. Ray Person, the Cats top scorer for the season was feeling the ill effects of the flu and netted only four points. For the game Tech shot 58 percent to the Cats 38 percent. The Cats came back with a smashing upset over UT-Chattanooga Saturday night in Reid Gym. Led by a 27 point performance from freshman Eric Taylor the Cats came away with a 65-60 Southern Conference win. The fired-up Cats and 3,615 fans never let up on the Moccasins, grabbing a 36-35 lead immediately after halftime, stretching it to ten points 53-43 with 10 minutes left in the game. The Cats held on to a spirited UTC charge, with effective foul shooting and clutch defensive play down the final minutes. Capping tHe game was Ray Person's blocked shot with 15 seconds left and Larry Caldwell's dribbling act to kill the clock. Although the Cats shot only 35 percent in the game they stayed with the much taller Mocs on the boards, getting numerous second shots. For the game, Taylor was 10-16 shooting and 7-10 from the foul line with 11 rebounds. Ray Person added 15 points, and Greg Dennis 13. Norm Anchrum hit for 18 points to lead UTC with teammate Keith Parker adding 12. The game was played under unusual circumstances as the electric scoreboard was not working and time had to be kept on the press table. To add to that the officials for the game were snowbound in Virginina and substitutes had to be used—with one of those arriving late. Yet for better or worse the game ranked as one of the highlights of the season for Steve Cottrell and his Catamounts. Monday night the Cats went 180° the other way as they lost a 78-54 decision to the surprising Southern Conference championship contenders, The Citadel in the Bulldog McAIister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina. Whatever could go wrong for the Cats on the court did in the first half as Western fell behind 36-14 at the half. WCU shot only 5-17 from the floor in that disastrous half, committing 19 turnovers. Ray Person's three-point play with 10 minutes left in the half made the score 10-9 for the Citadel with Western very much Up and in! PHOTOBYJEANETTE BEAUDRY in the game. The Bulldogs, however outscored the Cats 26-5 the rest of the half to insure the rout. Western was able to get untracked in the second half but could never get the difference under 20 points. For the game Western shot only 18-62 from the floor 29 percent, and committed 24 turnovers. The Citadel shot an even 50 percent in improving their record to 9-2 Turn to Page 7, Please K M H B D FREE DELIVERY PIZZA ONLY!
