  • PAGE 8/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 27, 1978 Special Ol) Youngsters compete in six events The outside temperatures may have been chilly, but there was warmth to spare on the track at Western Thursday as some 120 young people from five WNC counties took part in the 1978 Western Regional Special Olympics. The participants—all of them exceptional—were gathered together to compete in tour track and two swimming events, with the possibility of a trip to the North Carolina Special Olympics for the winners. The event began with the traditional parade around the track and the administration of the Special Olympics oath—"Let trie win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." Then nearly 300 helium-filled balloons of different colors were released, and the games began. Events included the 50-yard dash, running long jump, standing long jump, and a softball throw for distance. Swimming events were 25-yard and 50-yard free style. Anna Bolick of Cherokee County served as Western Regional coordinator for the Special Olympics. Games director was Dr. Helen Hartshorn. WCU professor of health, physical education and recreation. Other WCU faculty helpers included Dr. Jim Bryant, Paul Jones, Betty Peele, and Mike Creason.
