  • The^stern Carolinian/ THURSDAY MARCH 2,1978 Vol.XLIII.No. 23 CULLOWHEE, N.C. Nine-month investigation Three students busted for MDA possession, sale Three WCU students were arrested last week on drug charges involving methylenedioxy amphetamine, commonly known as MDA, according to Jackson Co. Sheriff's Department records. The arrests are part of a nine-month investigation involving six law enforcement agencies. Jackson Co. Sheriff Fred Holcombe was not available at press time to comment on subsequent or planned arrests. Robert Franklin Akers, 21. is charged with two counts of sale and two counts possession with intent to sell MDA. Charles Ladd Freeman Jr., 22, is charged with conspiracy to sell MDA. Robert Cramer Cox, age unknown, is charged with accessory before the fact of the sale, possession with intent to sell, and conspiracy to sell MDA. Akers was arrested Feb. 20 and Freeman and Cox were arrested the following day, according to the records. Akers is free on $16,000 bond, and Freeman and Cox are free on $5,000 bond each. The Sylva Herald and Ruralite quoted Sheriff Holcombe last week as estimating the "street value" of six confiscated ounces of MDA to be $50,000. A more reliable source has set the highest possible street value of the confiscated MDA at $6,700. Participating in the investigation are the Federal Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Jackson Co. Sheriff's Department, the Swain Co. Sheriff's Department, the Buncombe Co. Narcotics Squad, and WCU Security. Zowie Jeff Johnson (right) beat Rick Dillon last night in the TKE Boxing Match. Finals are tonight. Transmitter blows at WWCU A faulty transmitter caused WWCU-FM to go off the air for five days or more according to Production Manager Dave McElvein. The transmitter has been described as "notorious for its temperamental behavior"-broke down about 2:30 Monday afternoon for no explainable reason. An attempt to resume broadcasting was made Wednesday morning after the station's contract engineer had examined the transmitter. Two hours after the broadcast, the transmitter shut off again but is expected to go back on the air Friday morning at 6 a.nl. The station hopes to purchase a transmitter from Indiana Universitv which is already set at 91.7 megahertz which WWCU operates on. The transmitter will cost the university around $900 and will be used as a backup unit once the original transmitter has been repaired and returned. The transmitter being bought from Indiana will be used as the back-up unit because it is the older tube-type transmitter instead of the transitor type now being used. DeCrow, Schlafly debate ERA Tuesday De Crow Extremism expected Karen DeCrow and Phyllis Schlafly will debate the Equal Rights Amendment March 7 at 8:15 p.m. in the UC. Ms. DeCrow, pro-ERA president of the National Organization of Women, and Mrs. Schlafly. anti-ERA writer and speaker, express the most extremely divergent opinions on the proposed 52-word constitutional amendment. The two will debate as the US Congress considers extending the March 1. 1979 deadline by which two-thirds of the states' legislatures must ratify the amendment for it to become law. The ERA is three states short of the 38 needed for ratification. Ms. DeCrow, author of two books and numerous articles on feminism, received a B.S. degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a J.D. degree from the College of Law at Syracuse University. Mrs. Schlafly, a holder of a B.A. degree from Washington University and a M.A. degree from Harvard University, is author or co-author of seven books and writes the monthly "Phyllis Schlafly Report." The debate, sponsored by the WCU Lectures. Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee, is free for WCU students and LCE subscribers, $3 for other adults, and $1.50 for non-WCU students. Schlafly
