Juke Jive: 'Long Hard Ride' For Your | Bicentennial Engagement and Forever by Rob Clowers Long Hard Ride Marshall Tucker Summertime in Cullowhee is really great. One can walk through the mountains or when it gets hot go tubing, or just to Bear Lake; really enlightening. Now, the boys from Spartanburg would surely appreciate doing any of our activities here at WCU. It seems however that they have been working hard in the studio and sweating through summer gigs. Upon reviewing their new album, I was accompanied by three friends with various spirits such as Jack Daniels, Rittenhouse Rye, and Rebel Yell, not to mention a couple of good cigars. We came up with some good ideas, and before the night was over we had a good ole-timey hoe-down. There is a song on the album named Long Hard Ride. There has obviously been many, many hours spent in creating this song; it's truly a Tucker classic. Long Hard Ride has extremely western influence in it with a bit of bluegrass, and of course, the familiar country guitar sound. Charlie Daniels, who has played on previous albums, puts his spine-tingling fiddle on tape for the band. John McEuen, a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member, plays banjo and mandolin superbly. I might add that McEuen's performance in concert is fantastic if you like fiddlers that can jump to the music and still keep excellent timing. On the song Property Line, the lead vocals are done by Toy Caldwell. Notice his accent and voice pitch. With the song Am I the Kind of Man, it seems that the band's music mellows at times, and the rich quality on vocals makes for a truly fine song. In the past, almost all song material was written by a single member of the band. The new album features material by various members in the group. In Spartanburg, like many other places, we really hold on to old memories. Old times are not forgotten, and many a good time was had just from remembering yesterday's. Holding On to You, written by George McCorkle, seems to be a memories song complete with steel guitar. My favorite song on the album is You Say You Love Me, which I think is very typical of the MTB Spartanburg sound. This song was the way they used to sound back in Sparkle City at the Ruins, an old bar which has still refused to die. I am impressed with the acoustic quitar work on the album. Toy Caldwell's steel guitar work is outstanding and such people as Hank Williams, Jr., Scott Boyer, Tommy Talton of Cowboy, and Elvin Bishop just to mention a very few, have requested Toy to work as a studio musician. Let me remind you to listen for and follow Paul T. Riddle on drums. Paul is a conscientious musician and he never misses a lick.
