  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday March 22, 1973 page 3 WCU Residence Halls May Change Resident Arrangement WCU residence halls may possibly undergo some changes in structure next year. A resolution to make Leatherwood Hall a coed residence and Albright Hall a women's residence will be voted on by the student senate Monday , March 26. The resolution, introduced by Senator Dwight A. Sparks, calls for Leatherwood Hall to be a mixed-housing residence. This would put male residents on two wings of each floor and women residents on the other two wings. The resolution further states that Albright Residence Hall would be changed to a women's hall contingentuponspaceneed- ed to house male students. According to a recent poll taken by the student senate, a majority of male and female students are in favor of coed halls. A number of Leatherwood residents spoke with the Carolinian last night and their general opinion of coed halls was positive. One girl said that when the pollwas made it was not specified which residence halls would be affected, and when the w •iUJA Hf MMI One Show Only — 7:30 PM Thursday, Friday & Sattnttoy-Marctt 22-23-24 WINNER OF 2 ACADEMY AWARDS! nBEST SUPPORTING ACTOR-JOHN MILLS BEST QNEMATOGRAPHY "••••! PIECE BY PIECEI Original MARVIN SOT SCORE F£ /Wabble On MOTOWN RECORDS P Leatherwood residents found out that their dorm specifically was involved, a few women were upset. Cathy Burge of Leatherwood called coed dorms "a good idea." "The University needs to advance," she said, but she pointed out that many WCU women are not willing to give up their rooms. Other Leatherwood residents, Janice Bowers and Pam Shinn, expressed their approval of the resolution. "I'm for that (mixed-housingin Leather- wood) but not for the whole dorm to be boys," Bowers said. Another Leatherwood resident said that she was not a- gainst coed halls, but she strongly opposed "forcing people out." She maintained that Helder and Leatherwood were the nicest residence halls on campus, being the cleanest and having the largest rooms, and that Leatherwood residents should not be asked to live in one of the "dirtier" men's residence halls. Sparks, sponsor of the resolution, is optimistic about the future of coed living on the WCU campus. "I have talked with several high-ranking officials and all have been very receptive to the idea," he said. "Administrators are beginning to realize that making residence halls attractive is the only solution to the financial drain." Conflict .... FROM Page 1 about an outside member being on the selection committee. On the committee to select a new dean for the School of Business there are no outside members. That committee was appointed by Wilson. The Dean's Advisory Council is a committee of students chosen by the studentadvisory council of each department within the large school. Hulbert went on to say that Wilson's plan provided students with only "token participation." Another faculty member stated that Wilson plan did not even require the student representative to be associated with the school of Arts and Sciences. A faculty member declining to be identified maintained that Wilson was trying to drive a wedge between the department heads who have petitioned against Chancellor Carlton and the teaching faculty. Another faculty member said that "in our system we work together." Vexi t-fime /on Health Service Inspects Food Services Western Carolina's food services were inspected by the North Carolina State Board of Health several weeks ago. It was revealed at a recent meeting of the Board of Trustees that this was the first such inspection in twenty years. The Board's announcement brought some speculation as to Smoker To Be Held Monday The Inter-Fraternity Council will hold a Smoker on Monday, March 26, at 8 pm in the University Center Grandroom. The Smoker will mark the beginning of Rush Week, which will run thru Saturday, March 31, according to Larry Ford IFC president. Ford said that interested men can get information and have their questions answered at the Smoker, He also said that various programs are scheduled at the individual houses for those wishing to go thru rush. The fraternities "have had a pretty successful year," according to Ford who also stated that "this is indicative of the general national trend." The anti-fraternity sentiment, Ford said, is not as prominent as it once was. By joining a fraternity, Ford stated that "You will have the opportunity to select a group of men with whom you can be proud to be associated." He feels that "the friends you have in college will have a profound influence on your interests, goals and activities." Ford said, "a fraternity will help you develop scholastically and socially." Fraternity m»n get consistently better than average grades, he pointed out, He also said that fraternity men are more likely to stay in school because of the close friendships and inspiration found in a fraternity." the condition of our cafeterias, and some question as to where the sanitation grades, which are posted in the cafeterias are coming from. The district board of Health in Sylva is responsible for issuing the certificates, whichare changed at each inspection. Ac- coring to Mac Dendy, an inspector for the District, the local board acts as an agent for the State Board, and they send their reports to Raleigh. When asked about the statement concerning the last inspection, Dendy said that it was "totally inaccurate." He said that although the length of time between inspections has been "too long," the last one was made in 1969, not twenty years ago. Dendy stated that ideally the cafeterias should be inspected once a year, but that until recently the local board has been shorthanded. He indicated that in the future, the facilities would be inspected more often, at least once a year and hopefully more. D3ndy added that, although the inspections have been infrequent, the latest one showed the cafeterias to be in excellent condition, calling them "a credit to the management." Stedman Mitchell , director of Western's food services, said that whether or not there were frequent inspections, the cafeterias "operate on a trust," meaning that the students must be confident that the management and staff of the cafeterias take pride in keeping them sanitary. rmmr. —"^v 'cm <■.*£..
