  • Advance to Area VII playoffs Thursday, May 18, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Cats take district baseball championship can play .500 ball through the regular season and make the district playoffs, then we can win the district championship," said WCU coach Bill Haywood last March when the baseball season began. It happened just that way. The Catamounts finished the regular season with a less than spectacular 12-12 record, but got the final slot in the four- team district playoffs. Yesterday, those same Catamounts faced a Newberry team with a strong 20-7 record and the top- seeding in the playoffs. Haywood*! prediction stood, The Cats took an early lead and fought off the Indians to win the NAIA District 6 Baseball Championship, Western was quick in staging the decisive offensive. In the bottom of the first inning, Eddie Davis reached on a walk as the first Catamount batter. Dale Eox then reached when he was hit by a pitch and Newberry was in trouble. Bruce West singled in the first run and Jimmy Uiughridge followed with a two-run double to give Western a 3-0 lead. led Whitworth widened the Cats' lead in the bottom of the third when his blooping single brought teammate Jim Grove Newberry's only score of the game came in the seventh inning when Johnny Harbin homered. Dm Bright, who was named the tournament's must valuable player, was lifted in the top of the eight inning in lieu of Glenn Glover. Bright picked up two of the Cats three wins in the playoffs and gave up only one earned run in the Hi and 2/11 playoff innings he pitched. Clover came on withtwoaway in the inning and Newberry runners on first and second base. The quick righthander threw only nine pitches (eight of which were strikes) in retiring the next four Indian batters to end the game. West and Laughridge led the Catamount hitters with two hits each. In addition to Bright, three other Western Carolina players were named to the All-Tournament teams: outfielder Larry Goodwin, infielder Dale Eox, and catcher Ted Whitworth, The district championship was the fourth for Western Carolina University this season, Catamount teams had previously won the Basketball, cross-country, and track and field crowns.
