After five weeks on the road, the Catamounts will finally play in Cullowhee this Saturday night as they meet the Chotaws of Mississippi College. Both teams are dragging heavy season records into the game and both need desperately to win. Mississippi has yet to win a game this season, although they outgained three of their opponents in losing. The Chotaws, like the Cats so far this season, depend upon their passing attack with a limited rushing offense. Only slightly better than the Chotaws 0-4 record is Western's 1-4 mark, It's an odd situation, despite the readv image of two losers that pops up first, Western has enjoyed two strong seasons under coach Bob Waters, a 9=1 and a 6=3. The Catamounts looked inexperienced but strong this season. A 1-4 season at this point was unexpected. Mississippi does not have a "slouchy" football program. The Clinton, Mississippi squad WCU'S LEADING RECEIVER Jerry Gaines, who caught four passes for 110 yds. last week against Furman, may miss the action Saturday due to an ankle injury. hails from an enroUment of 2,300 and has had only four losing seasons in 15 years. Injuries have cost both teams this season. WCU lost quarterback Hal Mote along with Injuries to Mcintosh and other key personnel. Mississippihas watched its entire starting offense backfield be replaced due to injuries. Neither team lias recovered Western Carolina is still minus Mote and has added starters Jerry Gaines (ankle), Jimmy Laughridge (knee) and Eddie Sveum (ribs) to the disabled list The Western defense will be the key agiin this week. So far this season it has consistently given the offense good field position and opportunities to score. They have accounted for 11 fumble recoveries, 11 pass interceptions and 28 punts whUe the offensive unit has managed only 12 touchdowns. Game time is set for 7:30 in Memorial Stadium., Winning seasons a tradition for WCU crosscountry team Winning seems to be the key word at Western Carolina for the cross country team. The 1971 season is looking as though it wUl be another championship season for the Catamount harriers. Roughly only one third of the way through the season, the WCU runners have already piled up on impressive 18-8 record, heralding such teams as Furman University, MUligan College, the Citadel, and Davidson """oUege as recent fatalities. The final meet of the 1967 season seems to have been the starting point of the now existing tradition. With a season record of 0-7, the WCU harriers defeated Mars HU1 26-33 and the new way of life for cross country at Western began. 1963 saw the cross country team under the coaching eye of Heath Whittle. Coach Whittle set out on a Catamount offensive that turned in a 23-4 season record, which included the NAIA District 6 Championship and 25th place in the NAIA Nationals. Terry Helms, super-runner from Kannapolis, made the cross-country scene in 1969 and led the WCU terriers to a 16-6 season and a tie with Appalachian for the District 6 Championship. Last s-sason, WCU ted a new coach, Roger Thomas irom Seminole Junior CoUege in Fla. Along with a new coach, Western added champion runner. Bon BaUey to its roster and was witness to the season long I Helms-BaUey battle for the first place slot The contest led the harriers to a 27=7 record along with fourth place in the State meet the NAIA District 6 Championship, first place in S. C. AAU's, and 15th position in a field of 77 teams at the NAIA nationals. For the 1971 season, Coach Roger Thomas has returned along with veterans Terry Helmes , Ben BaUey, Steve Fleming, Tom Gibbons, Jerry Greene, and FarreU Parker. Rookies for this season are high school champion mUer, Randy Helderman, Steve HU1 Mike ProzaUeck, and Brooks Bennett ' 'I must admit I'm optimistic for the 71' season," says Coach Thomas," We have five letter- men returning out of our top seven last season, and with help from some outstanding freshmen, the season looks good." So, tradition has made its way to Western Carolina's cross country team and this season looks to be no exception.
