This startling fact was disclosed in an exclusive interview with Mitch Ryder after his performance in Reid Gymnasium here last night WCU Students Work In Nicaraguan Orphanage Mitch Ryder's life since twelve. I enjoy performing especially for college groups such as this one tonight Their response is so very important—they test your act If they like you, OK, and if they don't they are quick to tell you so. Mitch, from Detroit, met his wife there, and they have one child who is three years old. Traveling around to different college campuses separates him from his family, but according to the entertainer, "I usually make it home about once a week. Soon the group will be taking an extra long vacation for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This will give us a chace to rest up for our trip to Russia in the spring." Entertaining has been part of Most of the performances Mitch Ryder gives are in the form of concerts to college students. They have traveled to every state in the union except Alaska and have appeared in such countries as France and England, College campuses and college students are familiar sights to Mitch althouth he never attended college himself. During his career, his group has made many popular hits, but the biggest being "Devil with the Blue Dress On," amd "Sock It to Me Baby." Mitch does not like exclusive press coverage! He commented "Too many popular singing groups are exposed by reporters and the press in general. We don't want this! Our purpose is to present some ■ thing that is always new for our audiences." Nonad Dead I he The deadline for the NOMAD has been extended for another twoweeks. This means Nov,28 is the new deadline to get your manuscripts turned into the English office in 205 McKee. "With the support of the students we can have one of the best student magazines in the state!" says Gerald W, Matheny, Editor. He continues, "I believe that many of the students who are good writers of either poetry or prose are afraid to submit anything which is a little risque' They thin'< that it would not have a ghost of a chance of being published. Do not think this, fellow students, if you have an idea or a manuscript you have beenkeeping for this reason, then polish the work and submit it. If the poem or story has sufficient literary merit, then rest assured it will be published," This past summer four WCU students spent ten weeks in Nicaragua, Their stay abroad was quite different from the usualforeign vacation, however, in that they went to work as a team in a BSU-sponsored mission project The team was composed of Patti Johnson, Bennie Roberts, and Hugh Boulden, seniors; Gail Sumner, a junior; Joe Clontz, the Baptist chaplain on camp;s, and Mrs. Clontz, an instructor in the English department Light of their ten weeks in Central America were spent at the Christian Horn.' for Children in the Selentiname Islands in Lake Nicaragua. The Children's Home was founded and is directed by a Nazarene pastor, Alejandro Herrera, However, the Nazarenes do not financially support the orphanage and Herrera is almost totally dependent upon outside help, most of which comes from the American Society and the Union Church in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, The need for help with the work at the orphanage was called to the attention of the North Carolina BSU director by a friend in Managua. Because of the great interest in foreign involvement shown by the BSU at Western, students were asked to undertake this project Among the types of work undertaken by the group were the construction of a new, modern kitchen, improvement of the water system, classes in English, sewing , cooking, and hygiene. The group lived with the Just Right For Winter At Schulman's of Sylva people at the orphanage and shared their food, problems, and all the aspects of their daily lives. They gained a great deal of respect from the'Nica- raguans who live on the adjoining islands by their "becoming Nicaraguans" rather than living as American tourists, Herrera , who is currently in the States, will be in Cullowhee next week for a ten day stay, He will speak at the BSU one evening while he is here. Posters will be placed on campus, and everyone is invited to hear this enjoyable speaker, .lenge To Open Art Series Michael Zenge, brilliant pianist, from UNC-Chapel Hill, will open the season for the new and very exciting Chamber Arts Series, This Series is free to all students, and open to the staff and faculty at a very nominal sum. In the spring of 1968 the Chamber Arts Series was inaugurated by an appropriation from the LCE committee and work was begun to plan and present at least seven chamber concerts for the school year 1968-1969. This first concert, Thursday, November 21, at 8:00 p.m. in the Grand Room of the Hinds University Center, is the beginning of what the Series Committee hopes will be a most exciting and significant addition to the cultural events offered on the campus of Western Carolina University. Many handsome "carcoats" in kaki twill, all wools, herringbones, and cordoroy. Big selling plaid "outershirts" are great this winter. Add a smart- looking plaid "muffler" and the finest "gloves," and Men, you're ready for winter. Schulman's "Style Center of W.C.U." | Michael Zenge, born in Missouri, has degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the University of Illinois;, and has studied in Salzburg, Austria, at the Akademie Mozarteum. Zenge has won many competitions both in the Southeast and the mid-West For this concert Mr. Zenge has programmed works from the Baroque through the 20th century. Composers included in this program will be Bach,. Schubert, Haydn, Debussy, Chopin, and the contemporary composer, Leon Kirchner. Members of the Chamber Arts Series committee are Bert L, Wiley, Chairman; Roger Lumb, Mike Nichols, and Bryant aEOfllfi. ,—_ Feedback . From Page 2.
