  • Friday, October 8, 1965 The Western Carolinian Student Gov't. Heads Enjoy A Hectic Existence Page 9 By Steve Long Among the most respected and responsible students on campus are the President and Vice President of the Student body. Serving Western Carolina this year as President is Paul Cabe and as vice-president, Buz Helms. After a two-week campaign, Cabe emerged successfuly as student body president on April 5, 1965. During his strenuous campaign, Cabe appeared before a college forum to enable the students to better determine his abilities. Cabe assumed his full duties on May 1. He remained at the school much of the summer in order to adequately organize and meet with other student and faculty leaders. As president, he is responsible for all student-faculty government, including Men's House, Women's House, and Day Student Government. He directs all organizations pertaining to student government, insures that the Appropriations Committee functions as it should, and that the Senate follows the constitution. He is involved in speaking engagements off campus in which he represents the student body. In working with the administration, Cabe has obtained much advice and co-operation. Since both are working towards the same goal to keep student government on student level, there is a great degree of cooperation between the Student Government and the College administration. The SGA President works through the Student Senate which is very powerful on campus. Policies passed through the Student Senate go to the Policies Committee and then become accepted policy of the college. They are subject to revision only by the Board of Trustees. The faculty has shown Its willingness to delegate authority to students. There is a big challenge this year for the students to benefit from this delegated authority. Besides his position as president, Paul is a brother of Delta Sigma Phi. He Is also a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national Service fraternity which is the world's largest. He Is a dormitory counselor In Buchanan, and his majors are History and English. A much of his program this year concerns the student acceptance of the recommendations and suggestions from the Pre- Conference Session. President Cabe hopes also to increase the campus social program and to instill a more constructive attitude towards the academic side of student life. The position of president definitely has its prestige, but even more definitely, it is not all glamor. Besides the tremendous obligations and duties as President, Paul must carry a full college load. Unlike some people may think, professors tend to be more concerned with the quality of work done by college leaders than by average students. Many times the weight of the responsibility and pressure becomes overbearing and one gets discouraged. Paul said this happens to him about once a week. It is the assistance and encouragement of those working with him which helps him to continue. The leaders of the Student government organizations are very capable, which makes his Job much easier. He feels that if he has served the school and the student body, all his effort was worthwhile. Paul realizes that he is in the public eye and that much is expected from him. As in anything though, one cannot please everybody, so he endeavors to do only what he believes is best for the school and hopes that it is right. As vice-president of the student body, Buz Helms is Student Senate and editor of the Student Handbook. He is also serving as chairman of the Standards Committee, member of the Student Faculty Judiciary Committee, and member of the Student Appropriations committee. As a sophomore he was chosen Most Outstanding Senator. While a Senator his Junior year he, served on the Men's House Executive Board. Helms finds his duties challenging in trying to fulfill the needs of almost 3,000 students. He feels that the administration is "most co-operative" and that the student government could not exist without them. Helms further stated that the communication link between the students had been greatly increased by the use of WWOO, the College radio station. Helms has talked at some length with Mike Gray, General Manager of the station, and a workable schedule has been formulated to better inform the students concerning their student government. When asked about personal feelings resulting from his being vice president, V. P. Helms stated that he is here basically for the same reason as everyone, for an education. Each student has outside interests, his being a desire to promote an ever- progressing student government. Helms' major objective for this year is the Installation of a telephone In each hall of every dormitory. Mr. Kirkpatrick of the administration has been very earnestly working to achieve this project also. Neither Cabe nor Helms would be able to function as properly as they would like to without the consistent help of Sheridan Smith, recently appointed assistant to the president, and Janet Smith, the secretary of the student body. Helms and Cabe have a congenial relationship In personal and business affairs which Is very vital In carrying out the maximum needs of the students. Helms stated again that he is here for academic reasons mainly, but for those seeking extracurricular activity he has found student government very beneficial and recommends it for those with a desire to Improve the school. The abilities and personalities of Paul Cabe and Buz Helms appear to blend in a manner conducive to the progress of WCC and should heln to make this year a rewarding and successful experience for the entire student Body. Carolinian —Continued from page 4 dent. Such a tour of the campus newspaper office should provide a better insight into the intricacies of newspaper work. The hard work of producing a newspaper is only a "labor of love" in their endeavor to make available a quality newspaper for the students and faculty of WCC.
