  • 'AGE 4 THURSDAY MAY 9t 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Legalized extortion WCU's student affairs of officials have been making some dormitory residents offers they can't refuse. Residence hall coordinators, incensed at light penalties imposed by student court, are offering, in lieu of a court appearance, administration-imposed work hours to fractious students, who are told they are getting off easy by not going to court. The sentencing is done through phony "residence hall contracts." Student body president Harold Rogers was naturally alarmed when he heard of this practice. The WCU Board of Trustees, when it approved the SGA constitution in 1971, granted primary responsibility for student disciplinary problems to the student government. Besides, SGA courts rarely hand out to convicted students as much as ten work hours, the standard penalty now being imposed by the housing staff. The question arises, can University employees, in this case the student affairs staff, for their own convenience subvert the will of the Board of Trustees? The answer may come tomorrow when the Board, of which Rogers is a voting member, holds its regular meeting. Things appear to have cooled off for the moment between Rogers and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Glen Stillion. But, as we indicated, the situation may be different tomorrow. Two officers Today is the last day this school year on which the SGA will hold elections. The two offices at stake are general manager of WCAT and student senator-at large. The date of the election was not made official until last night, so the voter turn-out will probably be light. Nonetheless, we hope that a significant number of students will cast their ballots for these two important positions. Sincerely, Jim Dills More Wallowgate Editor: It appears that few have learned the lesson of Watergate. This week there appeared an appeal to "Return the Western Carolinian to the students. Vote against Dwight Sparks," There followed a bill of particulars signed by the Comm ittee for a Responsible Press. This is precisely the type of trial by accusation against which President Nixon continues to rail, and for which Donald Segretti (a Nixon operative) went to jail= Surely Mr, Sparks deserves to face his accusers, and the public to which this appeal is directed deserves to know the identity of the "Committee for a Responsible Press," It is easy to hide behind front organizations with lofty titles, Sincerely, Robert F. Simpson Noted historian Richard Current to lecture here next Thursday On Thursday, May 16, the Cullowhee chapter of Phi Alpha Theta will sponsor a lecture by distinguished historian Richard N, Current on the topic, "What's the Use of History," Free to all students and faculty members , the address will be given in the Belk Auditorium at 8:00 pm„ The speaker is a renowned scholar of the Civil War-Re» construction era and is one of the chief authorities of the Lincoln presidency. Dr. Current is presently Distinguished Professor of American History at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is serving as the 1974 Vice President of the Southern Historical Association, * WCAT But he suddenly found himself off the air. Brad France-Kelly, the other candidate for general manager, could not be reached for comment last night. But France-Kelly got in trouble with the campus security patrol two weeks ago when he and another disc jockey were charged with being inside Killian after midnight. It seems there is some ancient university rule prohibiting any of the disc jockeys from being in the building after midnight. Whoever wins in the election will have headaches aplenty. Among Taft Botner, getting the FCC to grant an FM license, and keeping a staff together, the new general manager should b? busy. Vote Today IN FRONT OF THE U.C. FROM 9 TO 6
