  • WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA 28723 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR Dear Western Graduate: Those of you who are being honored by receiving your degrees today exemplify the results of this process we call education, and you remind us that we have fulfilled the admonition of the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead that, "Education should turn out the pupil with something he knows well and something he can do well. This intimate union of theory and practice aids both. The intellect does not work best in a vacuum." You can succeed because you have been prepared to use your intellect in both practical and theoretical arenas, and you should always remember that you have prepared yourself in an institution of higher learning which cares about the individuality of its students and is concerned with how well you learn. It feels guilty if there is a chance you have not received our best teaching and personal attention, and it cares what happens in your career once you have left us. Your future is important to this university because you are a reflection of our abilities as an academy of learning. It is our hope that you will take all that you have acquired as a student at Western and apply it fully to the tasks and challenges which lie before you. As an alumnus of this institution you should help us to preserve that which is good, improve that which needs our attention, and defend the strong public education which has brought you to this important threshold in your life. Your continuing support of Western Carolina University will help to insure a promising future for the students which will follow you. Best wishes to you and your family. Sincerely, WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY 1S A CONSTITUENT INSTITUTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AND AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
