ROBINSON became Chancellor of Western Carolina Univer- sity on June 1, 1974, after serving as Provost of Purdue University (1971-74) and Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia (1968-71). From 1946 until 1968 he held numerous professional and.ad- | ministrative positions at North Carolina State University. A distinguished scientist and plant geneticist, Dr. Robinson was Ex- ecutive Director for President Lyndon B. Johnson of the Presidents Science Advisory Committee Panel on World Food Supply, the nations landmark study of world food and population problems. He is a former member of the executive committee of the Joint Council on Food and Agricultural Sciences, and also has served on the Planning Commit- tee on World Food, Health, and Population of the National Academy of Science and the National Science Foundation. Throughout his career in higher education, Dr. Robinson has been actively engaged in a number of assistance projects involving developing nations. He is cur- rently the American member of the foundation committee to establish the Sultan Qaboos Univer- sity in Oman, that countrys first institution of higher education. He has traveled to Nepal in conjunction with WCUs involvement with a U.S. assistance program to that Third World Kingdom. He was chosen as one of four Americans to serve in September 1982 on a select 10-member international panel that conducted the second quinquennial review of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organizations Research Center in El Batan, Mexico. In July 1982, Dr. Robin- son chaired a mission to Ecuador to review that countrys wheat and maize program. He serves as co-chairman of the Joint Private and Voluntary Organizations/University Rural Development Center. He also is a member of the Committee on International Programs of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. A former member of the National Plant Genetics Resources Board, Dr. Robinson was appointed by President Carter to serve on the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development. A member of the board of directors of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and of St. Josephs Hospital in Asheville, Dr. Robinson also is a member of the Governors Blue Ribbon Study Commission to explore the establishment of a Rural Development Corporation in North Carolina. A native of Mitchell County, North Carolina, he is a graduate of Mars Hill College and holds the bachelors and masters degrees from North Carolina State University. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in genetics and plant breeding from the University of Nebraska, the institution that awarded him the honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1966.
