WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA 28723 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR TO THE 1982 SUMMER GRADUATES My very special congratulations to the graduates of the 1982 Summer Commencement at Western Carolina University. This is your very special day, and we want you to enjoy it to the fullest. Many of you have pursued your higher education on a part-time basis and, therefore, have taken an extended period of time to complete your degree. Others may be graduating in an abbreviated period of time taking full advantage of the summer school sessions to shorten the time required for your college education. All of you have devoted much time and effort and made a special commitment to education to have achieved this milestone in the preparation for your life's work. We are especially pleased that you have these accomplishments which will help you to prepare for the work that you have ahead of you in your career. Leadership was never needed to a greater degree in the history of our nation than at present. The economic problems experienced on the domestic front and various problems in the inter- national arena all contribute to the difficult decade of the eighties. So many are depending upon you for the contributions you can make toward the betterment of mankind with the solution to problems hope- fully to come from your work. We are fully confident that you have the ability and the education to make significant contributions toward a better society, both here and abroad. We believe that you are ready to assume your responsibilities and that you will lead important and productive lives from which all will benefit. As you move out into the world, remember these expectations and willingly accept those respon- sibilities that you are likely to encounter. Remember, too, your university and support it with your counsel, advice, and resources. Return often to visit with us and help us to have Western Carolina University grow in importance to you, to other alumni, and to all of society as the years go by.
