McGimsey Sidney P. Marland Jr. is President of the College Entrance Examination Board, a national nonprofit membership association of more than 2,000 colleges and universities, schools and school systems, and educational organizations. Dr. Marland formerly served as Assistant Secretary for Education in the U. S.. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and as United States Commissioner of Education. During his tenure in Washington he was instrumental in the creation of the National Institute of Education, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants program. He began his career in education as an English teacher in West Hartford, Connecticut, and later served as Superintendent of Schools in Darien, Connecticut; Winnetka, Illinois; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Marland holds bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Connecticut and the PhD degree from New York University. He has received a number of honorary degrees, is a member of numerous boards and councils, and is a recent appointee to the Commission on Presidential Scholars.
