  • contributed significantly to the solution to some of the overwhelming problems in our citiesthrough contributions of money, materials and manpower to projects in housing, job training, industrial oppor- tunity and social betterment. Every leading corporation in this country is involved in one way or another in helping to solve the problems of the quality of our environmentand many of them have been working hard and effectively in this field for fifty years. In a world where everything is relative, industry has done a top-flight job. On balance, | see no reason why industry should apologize for its performance. In fact, the leadership of industry around the world has, in my view, done a job that is superior to the performance by leadership of government throughout the world. The accomplishments of business in achieving world economic growth have exceeded the accomplishments of governments in achieving world peace and_ stability. | feel the same is true in comparison of industrial and military leadership. | leave to your judgment the comparison between industry and education. This is not to say that everything that in- dustry has done in the past was perfect, and those of us who have now reached positions of some small influence will make changes as will those younger men just behind us and as will the class of 1971 when it assumes the leadership. Certainly there will be a great need for new ideas and for new and vigorous _ industrial leadership. If your generation wishes to achieve greater progress in the future, than those in the past and those of us in the present, the door to industry is open
