Smokemont housing

  • wcu_canton-2206.jpg
  • Champion Fibre Company was in operation at Smokemont, North Carolina, north of present day Cherokee, from 1918 to 1928 when they stopped operations to make way for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The clean up process was completed in 1933. In 1922 Smokemont was outputting 45,000 feet of lumber and 55,000 feet of pulpwood a day. A standard gauge railroad ran from Ravensford to Smokemont and a narrow gauge ran from Smokemont along Mingus Mill creek for about 20 miles. This photograph shows Smokemont logging camp housing.
