Shook Family Portrait

  • This Shook family portrait taken about 1925 shows sitting in the front, David (Cooler), 2nd row (L to R), Jim Jarrett, Mary Ann, Callie Lilly, and Mollie. Back row are brothers (L to R) Henry Clay, Dan, John Wesley, and Rufe. Their sister, Mary Ann, is Jim Jarrett’s grandmother. Callie Lilly is the wife of John Wesley and their son is David. Mollie, also known as Mary Medford, is the wife of Rufe. This branch of the Shook family are direct descendants of Jacob Shook (1749-1839) and Isabella Weitzell Shook (1749-1834). After serving in the American Revolutionary War, Jacob Shook and his wife bought land and settled along the Pigeon River in what is now Clyde, N.C. Shook built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House.
