The central character of the region gives the project of a Southern National Park attractiveness not only to the people of the South, but to the entire Nation. Within twenty hours from New York and within the same length of time from the Gulf Slates, the Park would be calculated to do the greatest good to the greatest number. JUL Tenth. This part of the Blue Ridge is recognized as the most salubrious, combining a dry and equal climate, attracting thousands of people from the North during the winter months, and drawing large numbers from the Southern States during the warm season. It enjoys the best properties of a winter park and summer resort. The climate is healthy, equable, balmy, yet exhilarating. JUL Eleventh. The marine hospital service in conjunction with the surgeon general has been searching for a desirable location for the establishment of suitable sanitaria for climatic treatment of the men of the army and navy who may have developed tuberculosis in their country's service, and nowhere could a more desirable place be found than in the mountains of North Carolina. Our mountain country has always acted as a reservoir for supplying streams to all the Southeastern states ; and it is now a recognized scientific fact that to preserve the streams the forests at the head-waters of the same must not be destroyed.
