  • much like the Chimney Tops. But, unlike the Chimneys, these peaks have been burned over as a result of lumbering operations just across the line in North Carolina. These form a convincing contrast to mountains which still remain as Nature produced them. When you finally "top out" on the ridge itself there is for your enjoyment a superb view of the majestic forest at your feet and an equally worthwhile vision of stately Mt. Alexander as it rises in great beauty above the burned over territory at its base. You will, also, have an unusually good view of the south-east end of Mt. LeConte. This trip is worthy of the most versatile hiker and you will be glad to have been welcomed by the friendly trees, the gurgling stream and the protective skies. You will not mind the trek back to the starting point because of what you have gained in more ways than can be set down in black and white. Hikers, do not fail to make the Porter's Flats trip this year. Mark your calendar in red on November 1 and 2, 1930. Now follow us and let's see how we go about this thing. We will leave the Saunders System at 3 P. M., Saturday, November 1, and take highway No. 35 to the river beyond Sevierville. Here we cross the river and turn to our right along a macadam road, which we will follow through Richardson's Cove. The road now winds upward out of the cove, over the hills and down into Emert's Cove. Here the macadamized road ends and we take the Gat- linburg-Greenbrier road, which leads us to the Hotel in Greenbrier. We elect to spend the night here in preparation for our great adventure of the following day. Bring along a canteen and food for one meal, which will be lunch on Sunday. Bring along also your most appreciative frame of mind and prepare yourself for sheer enjoyment. Leaders: Guy Frizzell (Fhone 2—5353) and Tom DeWine (Phone 3—4171). 60
