  • THE SPIRIT OF THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS HIKER Some six years have come and gone since a forward looking group of Nature's Noblemen organized The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. From the beginning, the spirit of purest altruism and friendliness has pervaded the Club's activities. Saint Peter has surely made proper entries of credit due the several leaders and other faithful members who have carried on throughout the formative period of the Club's growth. Nevertheless, the present membership can show their appreciation by steadfast adherence to the principles taught by these pioneers in the Club's efforts. Ours is a rich heritage in matters of environment and "peopled memories", as well as leadership. Out-door folk from all walks of life find in hiking the ounce of prevention and the pound of cure so needful to well being, and proper balance in this age of cities and machines. Pure air and sunshine, with Nature's own ultra-violet, are ours for the hiking. And, for the plant hunter, the bird lover, the rock cracker, the ridge runner, and other "funny" folk, Smoky holds innumerable delights. Hikers arc learners, else we must deny that experience is the best of teachers. Hikers arc discoverers, learned observers in worlds unknown to others. Hikers are pioneers: who is he that Knows all the trails! Who, that can not blaze a new trail or have a new experience in the Smokies! Hikers are philosophers, for, to say the least, they can give a good account of what to do with such of "leisure time" as fall to one's lot. Ours is an abiding faith because we cherish the woods, the waters, and the wild life. These, like our dependents, need protection and intelligent care. We come to know from first hand observation where the duck-hawk nests, and why. We thrill with delight at floral displays not seen in vases. We are awed when we realize that the rocks we tread are cons old. We are intrigued by evi- 6
