~5~ completion of a new and more accurate topographic map of th® Smoky Mountains National Park area that is now in progress* £» th© matter of aos&enelatur®, the Geological Survey found that most of th© names given to peaks and passes is, th© Smokies by Buckley and Guyot had failed Jot to win popular approval. Several of them had been supplanted by others adopted by the mountain g@opl®| others had simply goa© into the discard without any substitution, leaving th© peaks uroamed.

This original manuscript, written by Horace Kephart likely around 1930, concerns the origin of place names in the Great Smoky Mountains. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Throughout his life, Kephart wrote many articles supporting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as the books “Camping and Woodcraft” and “Our Southern Highlanders.”
