  • GEORGE MASA DON TOPPING ASHEVILLE PHOTO COMPANY INCORPORATED 14 Church St. Asheville, N.C. Feb. 25, 1931. Dear Kep. I just finished new names on map which your committee send to Washington and I want you put on your map as follow- ing changes: - Deep Cr. Divide or Luftee Divide – Thomas Ridge (22) Suggested Name. Horse Ridge – Bone Valley Horse Cove Ridge Horse Ridge – Bunches Creek Horse Ridge Indian Ridge – below Redman Creek Redman Ridge Indian Ridge – East of Pretty Hollow Cr. Indian Ridge Left Fork Ridge – East of Enloe Cr. Katalsta Ridge Fork Ridge – deep Creek Fork Ridge Fork Ridge – Straight Fork Shawano Ridge Rock Camp Br. – Bunches Cr. Black Camp Br. Footnotes: (1) this ridge called Right Fork Ridge but Mr. Rhoades changed to Left Fork Ridge. I know, so you do, we haven’t single honor of col. Thomas in Park Area, so I changed it to THOMAS RIDGE in honor of Col. I like to change Deep Creek Divide for THOMAS RIDGE and give some name to Left Fork Ridge. What do you think, I will hold map till I get your answer. (2) As I told you that I asked to Taylor Gus about this Shawano war party (see Mooney’s Myths of the Cherokee page 406 paragraph 5) Gus said there is cave on that Ridge so I named, O. K. or not. Now in your list, you missed as follows (may I did) Suggested name Low Gap Branch – Big Creek Low Gap Branch. Low Gap Branch – Caldwell Creek Gap Branch. And you changed : - Rock Camp Br. Big. to Rock Camp Br. “ “ “ Little. to Veery Br. but there is Rock Camp Br. in Bunches Creek, so I changed this one to BLACK CAMP BRANCH. Then one more in your list page 2, Big Branch – Forney Creek – Mashie Branch (correction) but there is no big Branch in Forney Creek, it should be Noland Creek so I changed this one to SALOLA BRANCH. That’s all at this time, and please see what you think and let me know by return mail.

  • This letter from George Masa to Horace Kephart, and accompanying notes, relate name changes to places in the Smokies. George Masa (1881-1933) was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 1931, he was named to the three-person nomenclature committee for the North Carolina Park Commission and had the responsibility for accurately naming the peaks, streams, and other features. Mutual interests fostered Masa’s friendship with Horace Kephart (1862-1931), a noted author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Kephart and Masa often hiked together with park officials on inspection trips and provided information to stir public interest. Kephart wrote many articles promoting regional conservation and the park movement.
