Molasses making

Description

Molasses making time brings the community together. While modern day equipment speeds up and eases the process, the quality is not the same. The photographs in this series, taken on D. B. Lowe’s property in 1950, show how molasses was made in the nineteenth century. In this image, D. B. Lowe is operating the mill which grinds the cane. You can see the juice flowing into a wooden barrel, screened over the top with a clean burlap sack. More information about this photograph can be found in the Champion publication The Log.
