Likely Levi and Sarah Cook Smathers

  • This portrait on tintype with color added is labeled great grandpa and grandma Smathers, likely meaning Levi Smathers (1817-1896) and Sarah Cook Smathers (1818-1900). Levi is the son of the first Smathers’ to settle in Haywood County, Johannes and Mary Agner Smathers. He was the third and last person to add onto Jacob Shook’s house located near the Pigeon River in Clyde, N.C. Shook built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House.
