  • HARRY E. BUCHANAN, Chairman A man who places service above self and to whom the word impossible does not exist, Harry E. Buchanan fashioned the dream of a Cherokee Indian drama into a reality. He let his own personal affairs suffer, relegating them to a back seat, while he raised funds, welded eleven Western North Carolina counties into a gigantic co-operative project, and personally promoted Unto These Hills into a smash hit the first season. As chairman of the Cherokee Historical Association he has seen a pre-Unto These Hills dream become a reality in the recreation of a Cherokee town of 200 years ago, Oconaluftee Indian Village. Concerned with civic and political affairs since a young man, he has played an important role in the development of Western North Carolina. In 1953 he was appointed by Governor Umstead State Highway Commissioner of the newly created 14th Division with offices in Sylva. He served for 16 years on the Board of Trustees of Western Carolina College, appointed first by the late Governor J. C. B. Ehringhaus, then to successive terms by Governors Hoey, Broughton and Cherry. A native of Sylva, N. C, he graduated from the University of North Carolina and launched a career in theatre management. Since 1927 he has been a director of the theatre owners of North and South Carolina. He has been chairman of the group's Legislative Committee for twenty- seven years. He also is on the Legislative Committee of the Theatre Owners of America. He has been City Manager of North Carolina Theatres in the Wilby- Kincey Corporation since 1932. For more than a dozen years he has been a board member of the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce; President of the Henderson- ville Merchants Association; a member of the Board of Governors of the Country Club; Vice-President for eight years of the Hendersonville Horse Show; Vice- President of the Hendersonville Agriculture Development Company, and a Director of the Western North Carolina Fair. He is married and has four children. PERCY B. FEREBEE, Vice Chairman Gifted with unbounded energy and foresight, Percy B. Ferebee has used these natural qualities to inject a new spirit of co-operative action into the mountain counties of this section. A native of Elizabeth City, N. C, he came to Western North Carolina thirty-seven years ago to work with the U. S. Forestry Service—and stayed. He adopted the mountains and the mountains adopted him. A graduate of North Carolina State College, his interests are many and varied. He is a State Senator and a former member of the N. C. State Highway and Public Works Commission; the Board of the N. C. Department of Conservation and Development; the N. C. National Park, Parkway and Forest Development Commission; the board of trustees of the Greater University of North Carolina; treasurer of the N. C. Bankers Association; vice-chairman of the Cherokee Historical Association; former mayor of the City of Andrews; and member board of trustees, John C. Campbell Folk School. If that is not enough, he is president of the Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Andrews, Murphy, Kobbinsville and Hayesville. A widower, he has one son. Fourteen
