Do not enter or leave the Garden through the Faculty Lounge even though the doors may be open. The cushions for reclining chairs are on a table in the corridor. Return a cushion to this table when you leave the Roof. The cushions are not water proof. The umbrellas can be opened when needed, but they should be closed when you leave the Roof* High winds can do much dsaaage to them* 19. MICROFILM READING MACHINES. Three microfilm reading machines are located on the main floor mezzanine* Ask a library assistant to instruct you in the use of these machines* 20* MICROCARD READING MACHINES. Microcard reading machines are available at the Charging Desk on main floor* 21* STUDY CARRELLS. There are 27 Study Carrells in each Reading Room and 16 study tables on the main floor mezzanine for the use of Freshmen and Sophomores* Ask at the main Charging Desk if you wish to have one assigned. 22* FACULTY STUDIES. 38b Faculty Studies are assigned to Juniors and Seniors on request* No visiting is allowed in either the Carrells or the Faculty Studies*

This 42-page scrapbook was put together by Levern Hamlin, a Roanoke, Virginia native who moved to Cullowhee, North Carolina in 1957 to attend Western Carolina College. Levern Hamlin was not only the first African American to attend Western Carolina College but the first African American admitted to a North Carolina state college. As a speech therapist practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hamlin decided to further her training in special education through the college’s graduate division. The scrapbook begins with Hamlin’s account of her arrival at WCC on June 11, 1957 and includes numerous clippings describing the significance of her enrollment. The scrapbook contains entries from her summer semester at WCC extending to July 20th, 1957 when she arrived back at her home in Virginia. Hamlin had previously attained a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Virginia’s Hampton Institute in 1956. Also included are pamphlets and clippings at the end of the scrapbook.
