Sot 384. asbetotlle, B, C, The following legislation has been secured by the Appalachian ational Park Association since its organization on November 22nd, 1899: Nov. 22nd, 1899: Appalachian National Park Association organized at Asheville, North Carolina. Jan. 2nd, 1900: Memorial of the Appalachian National Park Association presented to Congress and referred to the Committee of Agriculture. Apr. 17th, 1900: Officers of the Park Association appear before the Agriculture Committee presenting the cause of the Appalachian National Park Association. Apr. 21st, 1900: Senator Pritcnard introduced a Bill praying for an appropriation of five thousand dollars for a preliminary investigation Apr. 26th, 1900: Senator Pritchard's Bill asking for an appropriation of five thousand dollars for a preliminary investigation passed to become a law on July 1st. Summer of 1900: Government forestry Bureau with the co-operation of the Geological Survey investigate the Southern Appalachian mountains from Virginia to Alabama. Jan. 1st, 1901: Secretary James Wilson of the Agriculture Committee sends a report to Congress through the President regarding the investigation made. Jan. 10th, 1901: Senator Pritchard introduces a Bill praying for an appropriation of five million dollars for the establishment of a national forest reserve in the Southern Appalachian mountains, approximating two million acres. Bill referred to the Committee on Agriculture. Jan. 18th, 1901: North Carolina passed a Bill ceding to the National Government the right to acquire title to such lands as might be desired for forest reserve purposes and exempting the same from taxation. Jan. 19th, 1901: President McKinley presents Secretary Wilson's report with a special message to Congress recommending this report to the favorable consideration of the Congress.

  • These 14 pages include several drafts of a document titled, “Legislation Secured by the Appalachian National Park Association.” The documents outline the early efforts and successes of the Appalachian National Park Association. On January 4, 1900, the association submitted a Memorial to Congress and, on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park. Also in 1901, North Carolina passed a resolution ceding the right to purchase land and acquire title by the federal government; by mid-1901, five other Southern states followed suit. Also in 1901, President McKinley expressed support of the project. Although the organization had major successes early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.
