  • Dec. 4th 1938 Dear Leonard. If this is to reach you by the 10th it is well to get it started. These R.D’s are not swift. With a two ender like Masonville & Jacksonville you must allow much extra time. Last week Mon. Barbara wrote Lucy that the Birds would be over Thur. if convenient. Lucy received it Thur. a.m. She immediately telegraphed them to come, she gambled on its getting through. The Birds took a chance & as they passed the gas station Mr. Nevins told them of the telegram. It had been handed along that far on its way to them. The messages – wire or phone – have to go to the postmaster at Masonville. In case of anything vital, he makes a special trip to carry it. Well that is long preamble to say we all had fine Holiday time. The Birds stayed until Sun. afternoon & dropped me at home on their way. Lucy had told them to pick me up Thur. & had us all stay at The Lurch. Alfred — the young farmer living in the other side of this house took care of my fire while I was gone, so all was comfy here. The Buffalo folk too were at The Lurch part of the time. Praise be, Fritz took his two boys & “Kep” (Lucy’s David) to Phila the Wed. after Xmas & did not get back until New Years night. His two
