  • They hope to be able to keep house. It has eased up the finances to have Mrs. F + Ethel with them. Margaret has had her last treatment unless something new develops; the Drs expect to keep tab on her for five years after the operation. George was busy all last week with The Paper Convention. He feels that a good break is just at hand. The next month will tell the tale. If things do come right he will be on top of the world. Roy has worked up quite a trade serving legal papers; he has helped at a filling station + at harvesting ice. He was fortunate in having a friend who is auditor for [Manville]; this helped him to get a tree job for Bartlett. All this makes it possible for him to hang on here a while longer. I am glad for if they pull up + go to Ithaca, it will mean no job there + perhaps loss of chance here. That’s the family history to date except me. Perhaps the Stephens evident prosperity was an added urge to look myself in the eye. I found quite a bit of bitterness, mostly caused by finances, + a feeling of 71 years futility.
