West 1 Interviewee: Cyritha "Rea" West Interviewer: Anne Collins Location: Jackson County, NC Date: November 4, 2004 Duration: 41:43 Anne Collins: Today is Monday, November 1, 2004, my name is Anne Collins and I am here in Hunter Library interviewing Rea West, and I just need to ask you, are you aware that you are being taped? Ree West: Yes I am. AC: Okay. Now we can start. What is your date of birth? RW: February 6, 1950. AC: And you are how old? RW: 54 AC: Okay. Were you born in Jackson County? RW: Yes I was. AC: Were you born in Harris Hospital? RW: Uh, not Harris, I forget the name of it, but it, it was in Sylva. AC: In Sylva? In the old hospital? RW: The old hospital as they call it. AC: Okay, and do you have brothers and sisters? RW: Yes, I do. AC: Okay, how many? RW: I have three brothers and one sister. AC: Okay, and they all live in Jackson County? RW: Yes they do. Description

Anne Collins interviews Cyritha “Rea” West on November 1, 2004 for the Western North Carolina Oral History Project. Born February 6, 1950 in Jackson County to William and Ella Mae Rogers, West talks about growing up in the AME Mount Zion Church and the changes she has seen over the years. She discusses how foreign it felt to go to an all-white school in 1964 when the schools in Jackson County became integrated during the period of desegregation. She discusses the Civil Rights movement as she experienced it in Jackson County and witnessing firsthand the rioting in Washington D.C. on a high school trip. She also discusses becoming a minister.
