The Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains constitute to-day one of the most popular health resorts in the world. Malaria is unknown. For those suffering from pulmonary taJteaxKHiaaisx troubles there is no better place. As has often been said it is one of the best all the year round climates in the world. The ajk^alachian National Park Association have gone at their work in a systematic manner, first interesting and securing the adi of the people in the Southern and Eastern states, next they brought their movement to the notice of the press thoroughour the country and the response which has been given to the movement by the press goes to show that this scheme is deserving attention at the hands of Congress, Their next move was to interest the different Congressmen of the South and in this no difficulty was experienced, A Memorial was prepared and presented by Senator J, C. Pritchard of North Carolina and a Bill asking for an appropriation and the appointment of a Commission to investigate — 7 —

This 9-page history of the Appalachian National Park Association was written in April 1901, just a half year after the organization was formed. The association was formed in 1899 for the purpose of promoting the idea of a national park in the eastern U.S. Although housed in Asheville, North Carolina, the organization was a multi-state effort, attracting representatives from six southern states.
