  • THE HARJMkOOD BARK ing the morals of our town. We feel it can't be excelled in this respect. Despite the fact that we have no church, we hold Sunday School every Sabbath morning at the little brown school house, prayer service Sunday night and cottage prayer meetings every Wednesday night at the home of some citizen of our community. Seldom does anything mar the quietude. Perhaps we will some day have a church. If we put our shoulders to the wheel we will get it. There was a real street parade given here one Sunday recently. One of our young men has a Ford that is a bit uncertain sometimes, so he and a party of friends obtained a pair of mules, hitched them to the car and did some real spinning, in spite of the heavy downpour of rain. Jess says Aaron Mitchell's mules are better than a self starter, for they take the car on after starting it. Guard Against Accidents Mrs. McGuire, wife of Dr. B. B. McGuire, and children, Nina Evelyn and Burruss Boyd, have been visiting Mrs. McGuire's parents and friends in Ohio for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Arlie McGuire, of Asheville, visited Mr. McGuire's brother, Dr. McGuire recently. . . Jess Brooks, et al, came back from a recent trip to Bryson City loaded with flowers. Evidently, says one joker, they came across somebody who didn't know them. . . Mrs. "Jack" Bryant has been seriously ill, but is improving. . . Henry Franklin has been ill for a few days, but we learn that he is better. NEWS FROM THE OSAGE Two Osage Indians took on so much firewater they wound up in the hospital.. "How do you feel now?" a pretty nurse asked the first Indian the next morning. "Me all right," said Indian No. 1. "But Joe very sick. Joe he blind. Last night five turkey buzzards with big plug hats sit on bed and Joe he no see 'em. Joe his eyes very sick." Little Girl—"Mother what did you do when a boy kissed you?" Mother—"Never mind." Little Girl—"I did the same thing, mother." —Wood Construction. ■*r Maben ft' A day and a half's work, possibly with the mill shut down part of the time, was recently avoided in the repair of the elbow of the main steam pipe between the boiler room and the sawmill. The elbow began leaking and something had to be done to. keep steam from escaping and impairing the efficiency of the mill. Instead of tearing out the pipe and elbow to fix the leak, Superintendent Brass had C. E. Watkins, supply man, buy a quantity of cast iron Smooth-On cement, which was applied at the leak and soon hardened. Supply costs for the month of April at this operation were lower than for any month of which records can be found in the history of Maben, being considerably under the usual cost, it was learned from Mr. Watkins, supply man, recently. Much of the saving is ascribed by Superintendent Brass to a policy of gathering and utilizing what is ordinarily looked upon as scrap. Then, too, Supply Man Watkins is careful. Jerry Williams, our Old Timer on the pond, with more than thirty years to his credit (thirty-three to be exact), recently commented on the excellent poular logs we have been getting from the woods. In his opinion they are as good as any he has ever seen in his many years of experience. We were all glad to see Mr. Williams back on the job at the pond after an absence of a few days because of sickness. It is the good work of such Old Timers as Jerry that makes us all feel there m '.'.'•■ft.'. L... ought to be thirty-year pins as well as twenties and tens, in recognition of the services of the small, but increasing band of men who have worked at least three decades with our company. Vaughn Geiger, who recently returned to our company, has charge of the remanufacturing plant, with Donald Franklin, offbearer. . . Mr. Tompkins, St. Mary's Ohio, inspector for the St. Mary's Wheel Company, was recently here on business for a few days, during which he chose some nice rim strips and hickory billets for his firm. Come again, Mr. Tompkins. . . Mrs. C. B. Rishell, wife of our kiln operator, was recently called to Pennsylvania by the serious illness of her mother. The Rishells recently left the clubhouse to go to housekeeping in the dwelling formerly occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Barrett, now of Blackey, where Mr. Barrett is store manager. Blair says there is more work connected with housekeeping than he ever dreamed of. During the illness of Miss Mayme Appling, Mrs. Rishell taught school here for a few months this year. . . Mrs. C. J. Brass, wife of our superintendent, has been visiting relatives in Alabama. Mrs. Brass is a real Southern belle, having seen her first real snow-fall March 17. She was much delighted and had a wonderful time out-doors. Nor will she ever "kid" her husband and friends again about the depth that snow can be. C. R. Neal, planing mill machinist, was called to Bristol, Va. recently because of the serious illness of his brother. Mr. Neal's daughter, Miss Lena, who is attending business college at Bristol, returned to Maben with CONSOLATION It is some satisfaction to a barber to know that he is in close touch with the heads of many organizations. Zeb, fifteen-year old mule which has been driven on the Maben yard by Frank Kulp for eleven years. Just a glimpse of Frank can be seen. Eleven
